Lambs sink the Saints
11 February 2017
Tamworth welcomed Brackley Town to a cold, damp GST Gas Services Stadium at The Lamb as Andy Morrell and Kevin Wilkin, two former Wrexham bosses, went head to head for the third time as managers of their respective clubs in the sixth meeting between the two sides, all of which Morrell had overseen.
Morrell made one change to the side that earned a point at Worcester seven days previously with Paul Green coming back into the starting eleven at the expense of Louis Briscoe who took a place on the bench.
Tamworth got the game underway, attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half and Styche unleashed a superb right footed effort from 25 yards which whistled past the left hand upright when it looked like it would sneak in.
Tamworth took the lead in the fourth minute though when Green finished from the left of thebox, his first goal for the Lambs since January 2015 (1-0, 4 mins)
A missed catch by Jezeph saw a melee ensure in the Lambs penalty area shortly after as those present tried to get the ball either away or have a shot, and in the end The Lambs cleared their lines.
Brackley looked to shoot from all over the park and invariably missed the target by some distance, but Moyo did force Jezeph into a low stop on 18.
Moyo rose highest for a header that skimmed past the far post on 26 and Armson had a great opportunity to level on 29 but lifted his shot from 12 yards over the crossbar.
Newton finished Morley’s cross box ball with a tidy finish on 32 but the offside flag ruled it out. Morley struck from distance on 34 but his attempt to score against his former club was unsuccessful as the ball went wide of the right hand post.
On 43 Newton was perfectly positioned to head Armson’s powerful goalbound strike off target and for a visitors corner which came to nothing, and two minutes added time was shown.
Brackley forced a corner on the left by the clubhouse which Green hooked way and following a foul on the same player the whistle blew on half time when play restarted,
Brackley restarted the match after a longer than expected break and a foul on Dyer on the right wing set up Morley with the dead ball which fell to Morley and then to Newton forcing two corner in the process.
The second corner was deep and Green looked to double his and his sides tally, but it rose too much before dropping over the bar.
Adam Walker turned and shot for goal from 25 yards on 55 and it forced Jezeph into a dive even though it rose over the target. As the ball came back to the half way line Byrne’s crunching challenge on Green earned the Brackley man a booking.
After a shout for handball outside the box against Walker, although his feet were still in the area, Brackley forced a corner on the hour which allowed the visitors some pressure and Armson spotted an opening but was foiled by the fingertips of Jezeph who tipped the ball over the bar for a corner which came to nothing.
Graham was booked for a hefty elbow in the back of the head against Deeney on 66 and a foul on the right hand corner / edge of the area by Styche on 72 set up the visitors with a dead ball which Tamworth broke upfield from.
Newton forced Walker into a low stop as The Lambs pushed forwards and when the ball came back in from Deeney, Styche struck from the left of the box into the bottom right hand corner (2-0, 74 mins)
Byrne went through the back of Styche on 77 and Styche reacted to the challenge earning both straight red cards.
On 83 Lowe crossed from the left for Ndlovu to slide in and try and pull a goal back, but it popped up for Jezeph to gather at his near post.
MOM Green was replaced by Fox on 85 and despite the lack of a man on each side the game continued to flow as the clock ran down.
A lowball in from Deeney on the left on 90 was put behind for a corner ahead of the boot of Newton connecting with it.
Five minutes added time were shown as Newton headed wide at the far post, while at the other end on 93 Dean headed downward towards the goal and Jezeph fumbled allowing the ball to be prodded home from close range by Lowe (2-1, 93 mins)
Jezeph dropped low to his left to deny Adam Walker on 95 and Opoku replaced Newton before the whistle blew on three points.
