Lambs set up cup-date at Boro
21 December 2011The home side got the game underway but it was The Lambs who had the first chance with an early shot from Thomas saved by keeper Martin.
Then, and something of a rarity this season, The Lambs scored inside the first quarter of an hour.
In fact with just 5 minutes on the clock a defensive error by Cartwright allowed Sharrif to get the ball in the left of the penalty area and pull it back across the face of goal for St. Aimie to strike home sliding in at the far post. (1-0, 5 mins)
A minute later, a similar move from the other side by Mills almost found St. Aimie and McDonald was denied by the woodwork on 13 with a right footed shot which struck the outside of the left hand post.
Gudger placed a pinpoint cross onto the head of Mills on 15 but the ball nestled in the top of the net as The Lambs looked to make the game safe early on.
However Gardner missed a glorious chance to equalise on 18 placing his header well wide of the left hand post following a cross from the left wing when he really should have at least hit the target and forced a save from Collister who had been pretty much a spectator.
United kept up the pressure with a freekick from Spencer and Collister pushed it around the post for a corner.
However, three minutes after the half hour mark a defensive blunder by the home side allowed St. Aimie to set up a reciprocal arrangement Sharrif with and the latter fired home (2-0, 33 mins)
From then on until the half time whistle was the only notable incident was the booking of Gudger for the use of unnecessary language aimed at the referee.
After the break Tamworth went in search of a third and nearly for it from a right sided corner but Thomas' ball into St. Aimie found the striker off side and his blushes were spared as his header went wide and wouldn't have counted anyway.
Robinson put a free shot into Collister and as the home side increased the tempo there were no surprises when then pulled a goal back on the hour.
The goal itself was a very well taken strike from distance which Spencer struck on the half volley from 30 yards and beat Collister who was helpless to do anything about it. (2-1, 60 mins)
Gudger and St. AImie played a neat one two but the former was unable to get the ball past ‘keeper Martin and St. Aimie failed to double his tally for the evening with a misplaced low rolling shot from 12 yards which just missed the right hand post.
Sharrif found his route to goal blocked when Martin bumbled the ball away for a corner on 74 and from the corner the ball was worked back in but Sharrif's shot cannoned back off the underside of the bar and Mills was unable to beat Martin with the follow up header.
If it hadn't been for Collister's solid shot stopping in the final ten minutes Piggon and Spencer may well have equalised but they found the Lambs custodian in fine form and the final whistle blew on the match to set up an away trip to Nuneaton in the Quarter Finals.
