Lambs send Pitmen packing
30 July 2016For the first public match on the newly laid Lamb pitch Tamworth entertained the Pitmen, Staffordshire rivals who were relegated to the Evostik Premier at the end of last season.
Tamworth ran out in their new yellow away kit, with Hednesford in their red away kit, making thing as little confusing for any latecomers, but neither side seemed phased by it.
Belshaw made a snap save on 7 to deny Mutton from close range but from the corner, a Lucky strike from six yards out after lapse defending from a corner. (0-1, 8 mins)
Mills equalised on 26 with a low shot from 12 yards on the left of the area that squeezed past the stuttered dive of Ransome and in off the left hand post. (1-1, 26 mins)
Mills cross from the right on 37 was met by the head of Newton but the Pitmen keeper was equal to it in the last action of the half.
Hednesford made four changes at half time and on 53 Pitmen sub and former Lamb Lake-Gaskin committed a foul on the edge of the box but it was just outside and set up Deeney who fed Newton and his shot on the edge of the box was deflected out for a corner which came to nothing.
On 57 Sammons stuck the bar via the fingertips of Belshaw to keep it 1-1 and the keeper then denied him from the corner.
At the other end Newton struck powerfully just wide of the mark in the counter move towards the clubhouse end.
Sammon prodded a shot wide from 18 yards on 65 and when The Lambs countered, Davies netted to make it 2-1 on 66, a couple of minutes after coming on, after good work by Ross Dyer down the right to pull it back into the six yard box.
An excellently worked goal out of midfield involving Briscoe and Newton ended with Jack Lane striking low into the bottom right corner on 77 (3-1)
A few subs for both sides disrupted proceedings a little but Mills was determined and forced Crane into a near post save.
And the gaffer netted another pre-season strike in the 90th minute, volleying home at the far post from a corner on the left that whipped across the box and fell invitingly. (4-1)
