Lambs pay the penalty for not finishing first half chances
05 February 2011
Tamworth welcomed bottom of the league Histon, who had won their first game in twelve in midweek, to The Lamb looking to extend their unbeaten record to six games, and also their unbeaten home record to seven games.
Des Lyttle was without Jason Bradley, starting the first of his four match ban so Adi Yussuf started alongside Kyle Perry up front. Meanwhile, new signing Duane Courtney took a place in the bench after signing in midweek.
Histon got the match underway towards the Meadow Street end but the early chances fell to The Lambs with Marshall trying a curling right footed cross-come-shot and Sheridan hitting wide of the mark after good work from Yussuf inside the first three minutes.
The wind, whipping up the slope, was playing havoc with high balls and a Sheridan right wing cross curled wildly before MacKenzie was brought down, but the freekick had already been given the other way on 6.
Histon won a right sided corner on 11 but Mills was unable to reach his header at the far post while at the other end a foul on Perry set up Thomas with a right sided freekick but the ball went straight to keeper Welch at the far post.
Sheridan found himself with a shooting chance on 15 after the ball was whipped into the box and came back from Perry, but his attempt curled wide of the left hand upright.
A foul on Sheridan on the right set up Thomas again on 18 and with ten of the visiting team in the area he found Perry, but the ball ran wide and the same player was pulled down on the opposite side of the penalty box. This time MacKenzie struck the freekick and Welch pushed it away from danger for a corner with Bradley and Wylde coming in at the far post.
From the corner, Perry's header looked goalbound, but was cleared by Okay off the line and the follow up snap shot went wide.
On 25 Thomas sent in a great ball from the left hand corner and Yussuf planted his header well, but it whistled past the far upright with Welch seemingly well beaten.
Perry took the ball down well and slid it through for the run of Yussuf on the half hour, but he was muscled off it by Oyebanjo and The Lambs were forced to try and build again.
Yussuf was played in by Barrow on 35 but had strayed a yard offside in move forward in amongst the largely scrappy play.
Handball against Barrow from Okay's right wing cross gave the visitors a penalty on 36 and it took a while for Riza to be able to take the kick due to the wind, but he did and sent Atkins the wrong way for the opening goal of the game. (0-1, 38 mins)
From the restart and at the other end, Sheridan saw his shot deflect up and onto the top of the bar before being gathered by Welch and MacKenzie's knock over the top of the defence for Yussuf on 41 was hooked away for a corner by Oyebanjo which Riza cleared.
A yellow card was shown against Murray for a dangerous tackle on Barrow on 43 but the Histon defence cleared their lines until Perry redirected a Sheridan cross and forced Welch to save well. The ball then presented itself to Thomas at the far post and he saw his shot blocked by Okay.
The fourth official showed just one additional minute at the end of the first half which ended without further incident.
The Lambs kicked off the second period having made two changes - Christie was handed his debut coming on for Perry and Kamara replaced Sheridan.
A corner was quickly won on the left which flew through the box and went out on the other side for another, on the right but Christie couldn't get his head to it, and a minute or so later Yussuf lifted a shot from outside the box over Welch, but also cleared the bar.
Christie almost bundled the ball home on 50 but was thwarted by Welch, diving bravely at his feet six yards out before Kamara picked up a booking for a tackle on Mills on 54.
With the win now playing havoc with Welch's clearances, Tamworth worked to keep the ball in the opposition's half of the field.
Good work from Thomas on the left to get the ball down and into the box and then Kamara on the right, to take it past his marker, won a corner for The Lambs on 63 but Marshall was unable to get a clean header away at the far post.
Riza hit a massively over ambitious effort high over the goal from fully 35 yards on 67 in a rare ‘shot' from the visitors but there were not great signs from Tamworth that they would be able to break through and almost immediately afterwards Murray screwed a well set up shot from Riza's square ball horrendously wide of the mark.
Another foray forward from Histon saw Murray curl a right footed strike over the bar from the edge of the area on 70 and Tamworth continued to struggle to make possession count going forward.
MacKenzie hit a low drive off target on 73and was replaced two minutes later by debutant Courtney.
On 77 Yussuf did well to get the bouncing ball down and away from the covering defender but lifted his shot from the right of the box over the bar.
A wind assisted miss-kick in the area by Marshall almost allowed Atwood to grab a second goal for Histon but Atkins held onto his close range volley on 79.
Stutes boss Livermore brought himself on for the final 8 minutes as Tamworth went in search of an equaliser. A long throw on 84 was flicked on by Wylde and Yussuf lifted his shot wide of the near post and a foul on Bradley allowed Barrow to fire the ball into the danger area on 85 but Welch was more than equal to the high kick.
A corner was won on 86 but Barrow's dead ball was cleared from danger and Marshall saw his low shot palmed away by Welchwhile at the other end Atwood drilled a shot in and it deflected into the side netting.
Four minutes added time was shown at the end of the game in which Marshall got a header away but couldn't get it on target and Welch caught at height from a Barrow centre but there was no late late show and Histon took the points.
