Lambs pay the penalty
30 July 2011
Tamworth travelled to Martson Road for a 1pm kick off and came back with a pre-season draw after holding the lead for over 70 minutes against their Evostick Premier hosts.
After a spell of home possession the first chance of the match fekll to St. Aimie who received the ball from Patterson but lifted his shot over the bar.
Patterson went close with Read doing well to protect his area a minute later but from a corner on 9 Rangers broke and it took a defensive block from Tait to stop Shotton's ball entering the six yard box.
Good movement between Barrow, St. Aimie and Milton produced a chance on 11 and Stafford pushed forward for the next few minutes.
However, there were no complaints when Tait curled a low shot from the right of the box into the far corner on 21 to give The Lambs the lead (1-0, 21 mins)
Seven minutes later it could have been all square when Barrow stuck out a leg and upended Shotton in the area. He dusted himself down but found Hedge in fine form to deny his spot kick.
Shotton lived up to his name just past the half hour getting the better of Liam Francis and the ball fell to Budrys the Stevenson but the latter dragged his shot wide of the far upright.
As the half went on chances became limited, but Stafford could have had another spot kick on 40 when the home side appealed loudly for a pull back on Shotton, but the linesman and referee didn't give in to suggestion.
Before the match, Marcus Law admitted to hoping to have a selection headache in a couple of weekends time and on the second half show it is difficult to predict who the starting eleven could be in a fortnights time.
Law used all his subs at half time and The Lambs immediately showed they were hungry for another goal, Gudger combined well with Cain and the ball somehow managed to roll past the far post when it could well have gone in.
A cross from Cain was just too high for St. Aimie to direct a goalward header, and the latter forged his way into the box a few minutes later but found himself outnumbered and unable to get the ball square.
Douglas went down under a tame challenge from Tait on the hour and no penalty was awarded, then McDonald put a pinpoint cross onto the head of Francino Francis and he directed it into the top corner, only to be denied by a tight offside decision.
Stafford tried their luck following a flowing move down the left on 70 but Kinsella's shot rose above the corner of bar and post, and a momentary lapse from Hedge saw him almost caught out with a miscontrolled backpass.
Francino Francis had the makings of a chance ruled out for offside as the final whistle approached, but just when it looked like The Lambs would take a single goal victory the Lambs defender handled a dropping ball in the area and Kinsella made no mistake from the spot to level the tie. (1-1, 90+ mins)
