Lambs lose unbeaten record
03 October 2015
After the defeat at home to Alfreton in the FA Cup Andy Morrell selected the same starting eleven to face Curzon Ashton for the first time in the club’s respective histories at the Tameside stadium.
New youth loan signing Oliver Roberts took a place on the bench alongside Connor Taylor, returning from injury.
Tamworth got the game underway and the ball spent the first minute bouncing around the Curzon half with Durrell notable due to his pink boots and ponytailed hair.
Both sides looked equally matched for the first five minutes as both enjoyed the open spaces of the large pitch.
Warburton went close at the near post on 8 but was denied by a last ditch tackle to concede the corner on the left and then Hampson headed just wide but the flag had gone up unbeknownst to most of the players.
On 10, Tomassen denied Cummins at the other post with a tackle to concede another corner and eventually Belshaw received the ball from a header from Hunt.
On 18 a superb chance fell for Durrell off Tomassen’s lofted through ball to beat the offside trap but his chip over the keeper went over the bar by a foot or two, too.
Davies found Durrell on 20 with a good cross field ball but the lattre’s resultant shot was dragged wide and failed to test Burton.
After a break from a Tamworth corner by the home side put pressure on the Lambs box, Tamworth responded and on 25 Durrell hit a curling right foot shot from 20 yards, but watched it come back off the right hand post before being cleared. Tomsett spotted a gap in the Lambs defence on the half hour and dragged his shot fromthe right of the D wide of the left hand upright from 20 yards.
On 33 Green was booked after the referee decided he’d had enough and from the freekick Curzon put pressure on again but the forced corner came to nothing.
Then Durrell was set free through the centre and rounded Burton but his goalbound effort was cleared off the line by Shaw and although he got the ball straight back the angle and crowded box was too much to get a repeat shot on target.
A foul by Hunt on Newton set up Durrell on 40 with a freekick which went just over the target and then a close range shot by the same player nearly opened the scoring, before Cummins forced his way through at the other end only to find The Lambs defence in no mood to be beaten.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half and Belshaw was forced to use his feet to deny Warburton at the far post before the half ended goalless.
Roberts replaced Green at half time and quickly from the restart Hampson shot into the side netting from the left of the area.
And on 52 Cummins made it 1-0 to the home side after Guest’s ball from the left to Wright on the right was volleyed across / towards goal and parried by Belshaw but finished at the far post by Cummins. (1-0)
Durrell wriggled his way through the right channel on 63 but his shot was deflected out past the far post with Clarke running in and the corner forced another on the opposite side which was cleared.
Cummins made headway through the Lambs defence on 68 but his cut back was cut out, however on 71 Guest made sure of his finish from 18 yards into the far corner after Warburton’s effort from the left of the box came back out to him. (2-0)
A Durrell freekick from a central position 25 yards out was easy for Burton to catch at head height. Warburton as booked for a challenge on Mettam on 83.
Three minutes added time were played at the end of the game.
