Lambs lose the numbers game
21 January 2012
Tamworth welcomed the Barrow to The Lamb searching for their first league win since the end of November as both sides looked to pick up points in their respective mid table positions ahead of the final third of the season. The Bluebirds fell out of the FA Trophy following defeat after a long trip to Wealdstone the previous weekend and had been punished by Fleetwood a week before that so would be out to make amends.
Lambs box Marcus Law made two changes to the side that suffered loss to Wrexham the previous weekend with Danny Thomas taking a place on the bench and Francino Francis not featuring as Liam McDonald and Chez Isaac both started.
Both sides and match-day mascots Jack Coley and Charlie Clark entered the field of play through a guard of honour formed by ball boys Cottage Farm Rangers Under 8s before Mr. Hopkins blew his whistle for play to commence.
Tamworth kicked off the game towards the Castle End and Isaac won a freekick on the right wing which McDonald fired in to the box left footed. It came off the head of a Barrow defender and went out for a corner on the left which was taken short but the resulting cross was poor and keeper Pearson got his first touch.
3: A push in the back of Christie set up McDonald with a freekick on the right hand side corner of the box but his attempt was straight at Pearson who causght the chance.
7: GOAL: After a period of possession The Lambs took the lead after Wilson saw his shot from the right of the box under pressure from the covering defender fumbled by Pearson and Patterson followed up the rebound from close range despite the close attention of the keeper. (1-0, 7 mins)
11: GOAL: Scores were level when Smith volleyed home from a central position after Rutherford's chip in the box from the right. However, Tamworth should have dealt with the build up allowing play to switch from the left to the right across the box in a move that did not please the home faithful. (1-1, 11 mins)
16: Patterson finished a move out of the midfield with a rasping left footed shot from 20 yards but it was wide enough of the left of the Castle End goal not to trouble Pearson.
17: At the other end Collister blocked a low shot from Jackson and then Boyes but Christie required treatment following his hefty challenge in the centre circle.
27: RED CARD: Tamworth were reduced to ten men when Tait put a two footed challenge in on Baker down by the Barrow corner and the referee wasted no time in producing the red card from his back pocket.
29: A challenge on Christie in the centre circle infuriated the Lambs striker and although Green was called over by the referee to calm the forward down, Christie continued complaining and was booked for his protestations.
31: Law made his first change of the game brining Gudger into the game for McDonald and the nine outfield men reshuffled with Green going into the right back position.
33: Barrow won a pair of corners but Tamworth coped well enough with both.
35: Isaac picked up a yellow card while Barrow waited to retake their hastily taken freekick and The Lambs regained possession and pushed forward winning a corner on...
38: Although it came to nothing it did cause Barrow some problems in the area and a foul allowed Gudger to fire a freekick back into the box but the visitors cleared their lines.
42: After surviving an attempted push up field by Barrow, Patterson found himself just inches away from putting his head onto a dink into the box by Christie, but the Bluebirds regained possession and Hone was spoken to by the referee for a push in the back on Christie.
44: From the freekick Patterson controlled the ball in the box but under pressure from the defenders around him could only put the ball into the arms of Pearson from a few yards out andthe rain teemed down.
45: Having been warned a minute or two earlier, Hone was booked for another challenge on Christie as four minutes added time was shown. From the long freekick Christie headed at Pearson but the keeper was untroubled by his effort.
Barrow restarted proceedings and quickly won a corner on the right and Rutherford could only watch as his shot on the turn was somehow lifted high over the bar by Collister's feet.
47: Barrow continued to push forward and Smith looked for his second with a right footed shot which Collister dropped to smother.
49: GOAL: When Barrow attempted to put the ball back towards their back two but no one went for it, Patterson spotted the opening and shot for goal with his first touch, beating Pearson from 25 yards with his right footed drive in the far left of the goal (2-1, 49 mins)
53: With Tamworth now with a renewed sense of confidence Green found Patterson with a pin point pass from the right of midfield but the Lambs striker was unable to get a shot away by the sheer physical presence of the Barrow defence.
54: Christie forged a path at goal but his shot from the left of the box was cleared off the line by Lomax and they kept the pressure up from the corner.
55: Unfortunately for Wilson, he took a knock in the ensuing play and The Lambs were forced to make further changes on the field.
60: Thomas made an instant impact winning a corner on the left, and this caused some problems with fellow substitute Shariff seeing his shot cannon off a defender and out for a corner which was bizarrely easily wasted.
63: Thomas again caused problems with an attempt on goal which ballooned out for another corner on the left and then another corner on the right which was headed behind on the opposite side for another flag kick!
69: Barrow pushed forwards and a deep ball from the right wing forced Courtney and then Oji to clear away. The move finally ending with a shot from Cook which Collister smothered low at his near post.
71: Green was booked for a challenge near the half way line in front of the Lambs dugout and then Skelton picked up a card, but there was muych debate between the referee and the fourth official and the linesman on the shed side amid songs from The Shed highlighting the ‘confusion' on the field that quickly spread around the terraces before play continued.
79: GOAL. Cook fired his side back into the game with just under ten to go with a left footed strike from the left of the box after the home defence had failed to deal with the danger effectively. (2-2, 79 mins)
81: The same Barrow player put the ball into the net again with a looping header from the back of the area from a right sided corner but obstruction on Collister quickly halted the Barrow fans celebrations.
83: Bolland perhaps should have done better with his header 12 yards out from goal but could only direct his effort high and wide of the mark as Tamworth came under increasing pressure from the visitors.
84: GOAL: Cook battled his way through the Lambs back four and managed to get a final touch on the ball to see it bounce into the net from a few yards out to give his side the lead. (2-3, 84 mins)
85: A right sided Lambs corner came to nothing although Oji did manage to get a header on target before the whistle blew for a foul in the build up.
89: With time ticking away The Lambs won a right sided corner but Isaac was forced away from goal and Tamworth were forced to build again, from a freekick against Patterson on the left.
90: Gudger just failed to find a head from the dead ball and five minutes added time was shown and the final whistle blew on both one and three points lost.
