Lambs lose at top of table Cambridge

FT: Cambridge United 3    0 Tamworth

31 August 2013

Scott Rowland writes Tamworth travelled to The Abbey Stadium on
Saturday looking to bounce back from the unfruitful Bank Holiday weekend which
saw two defeats at the hands of Hereford and Dartford.

The Lambs were without Ben Richards-Everton
who was called up to the England C squad for their trip to take on Latvia in
the week through suspension, but welcomed back Jordan Rose into the back four. A
new face started in the form of Ryan Lloyd who joined just prior to the game on
a month's loan from Port Vale. Cambridge looked to continue their good start to
the season remaining unbeaten and featured last season's top goal scorer Adam
Cunnington and Richard Tait in their line-up.

As the game kicked off Tamworth almost
immediately went behind after two minutes when Cunnington found room in the box
only to see his effort blocked by Thomas. The Lambs took the game to the home
side in the early stages and an early chance for Darren Byfield saw Chris
Maxwell in The U's goal equal to his effort.  Lloyd saw his headed effort fall wide and Maxwell
also produced a stunning save on thirty two minutes to deny Wayne Thomas who
rose to meet a Richie Baker corner. The game flowed with chances for both sides
wide Dunk, Berry and Donaldson spurning chances for Cambridge as both sides
looked to break the dead lock. Cambridge took lead on thirty eight minutes when
Jordan Rose was adjudged to have tripped Luke Berry in the box and Cunnington
stepped up to send Belford the wrong way. (1-0 38 minutes).

HT: Cambridge United 1    0 Tamworth

Tamworth started the second half brightly but
it was Cambridge who doubled their lead, a Nathan Arnold effort was well saved
by Cameron Belford but Berry was on hand to tap in the rebound, which looked to
be from an offside position, which lead to much debate from the Tamworth
players and supporters behind the goal, but the goal stood. (2-0 58 minutes). The
U's almost made it three a minute later when Arnold was put through only to see
his effort well saved by Belford. The home side did make it three when Harrison
Dunk crossed for Berry to head home from close range. (3-0 66 minutes). Lloyd
Kerry came on for Andy Todd as Tamworth looked to find a way past Maxwell and
Jack Evans produced a couple of long range efforts that the home keeper dealt
with. Cambridge almost made it four when Dunk hit a low shot but Belford palmed
his effort away at full stretch.  On 76 minutes Jordan Rose was cautioned for a tackle on Dunk. Kerry fired in two long
range efforts in the final ten minutes as Tamworth looked for a consolation. As
the match entered injury time The Lambs suffered another blow as Jordan Rose
picked up a second yellow and sent off for a challenge on Mitch Austin meaning
he will miss out on next Saturdays visit of Southport to The Lamb.
