Lambs have to be happy with point
04 April 2009
Tamworth kicked off proceedings at Wetherby Rd. in glorious sunshine and quickly found the pitch to be almost as concrete like as that at Hucknall a couple of weeks ago.
Foster sent the first telling pass of the game in Wright’s direction but the ball was cleared away from him and a few minutes later Sheldon fired high over the bar from 25 yards.
Town’s Broadbent missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring on 10 minutes from Gray’s low ball into his path which saw the former somehow shoot off target when well placed.
Wright then won a corner in the deep depression on the left corner of the pitch at the clubhouse end of the ground which is easily three or four feet lower than the rest of the field of play but it was headed behind and from the resultant corner The Lambs struggled to get the ball over and Harrogate stole possession ending with a right footed drive from Marshall which brought Alcock into flight as the ball whistled past the right hand upright.
Sheridan tried to drop the ball onto the foot of the in rushing Wright on 21 and a Smith freekick almost found Sheldon in the area a couple of minutes later but the best chance came on the half hour mark when Blackwood burst down the left only to pull his ball back too square for ‘keeper Hedge to collect with Wright closing down.
Sheridan and Foster worked the ball well to release Wright again on 33 but there was too much weight on the ball and despite the continued hard work the home side took the lead a couple of minutes before the break.
Smith headed home a right wing cross on 42 to make it 1-0 to Harrogate and Broadbent then struck the outside of the right post with a right footed shot in the next move forward but Tamworth responded through Wright who received the ball on the edge of the area, chipped it over the incoming defender and calmly placed home on the volley past Hedge to make it 1-1 at the break.
With news that Southport and Gateshead were both losing Tamworth seemed to have more of the play at the start of the second period and Wright forced a corner early on which Sheridan received but blasted high over the bar from 20 yards.
The Lambs then took the lead on 63 after a foul on Pritchard saw Sheldon head Blackwood’s left sided freekick back into the danger area Wylde was on hand to hook the ball over the line from a few feet out almost from behind himself with his back foot. (2-1)
Tamworth made their first substitution on 65 and it was almost 3-1 but Hedge managed to stop the ball from crossing the line when Blackwood put a header on target, but Hedge, standing behind the line when he caught the ball, kept his arms stretched out just enough to prevent it going over and there appeared to be no question or doubts from the officials.
Harrogate responded with a goal of their own though on 69 through substitute James Dean, who slotted home on the left of the area from Broadbent’s knock back across the box and despite a fair amount of work from Tamworth, looking for the runs of Wright who found it hard to get past Hedge after beating his marker a draw was a fair result.
