Lambs fall to Town

FT: Tamworth 2    3 Alfreton Town

21 October 2017After a break from footballing action the Lambs ran out in driving rain to take on Alfreton less than 24 hours after the Lambs Scholars side had defeated Alfreton in the FA Youth Cup at the EST Electrical Services Stadium.
Andy Morrell made three changes to the side that suffered defeat to Gainsborough 2 weeks previously, with Shaun Rowley returning to the goalkeeping position ahead of Dan Jezeph and Sam Coulson making his first appearance of the season, while Conor Taylor came in to complete the eleven.
Alfreton got the game underway with the Lambs attacking the Meadow Street end in the first half.
On 6 Robertson broke through the Lambs back line into the right of the box and he cut back inside exposing Rowley but the keeper did well to defend his goal by sticking out a foot and conceding a corner.
The Lambs forced on of their at the other end but it came to nothing on 9 and Deeney tried his luck from distance on 10 but it swerved wide of the right hand upright in the blowing wind.
A low shot from a similar distance by Verma on 11 took a deflection out for a corner on the left and it nearly snuck under bar but was cleared and then put back into the mixer for another corner, this time on the right.
Upton was booked for a hefty challenge on the half way line on 16 on Alfreton captain Shiels, and as The Lambs regrouped, Alfreton pushed forward and when Robertson picked up the ball in the box and stabbed it home past Rowley (0-1, 19 mins)
Verma was unable to continue after taking a knock a few minutes earlier so Shaw came into the game.
Knights shot from the edge of the area on 26 resulted in a corner on the right but it was hit long and came to nothing and another from the left on 28 fell just past Taylor at the back of the area and he was unable to do anything to prevent the ball going out of play.
The Lambs were level on 30 when Styche picked up the ball in the left of the box and thumped it home into the right of the target for his 7th from 11 games (1-1, 30 mins)
Taylor and Burns combined down the right on 33 but neither Styche or Knights could divert the ball home from the centre of the box.
Alfreton regained the lead ten minutes later though, with former Lamb Daniels drawing Rowley out of his comfort zone before playing a diagonal ball past the keeper for Robertson to finish easily from a few yards out. (1-2, 40 mins)
Styche bagged his second of the game on 45 with a fine angled shot from the right of the box which beat Elliott and nestled in the far corner after Knights had sent him clear with a great ball out of the midfield, to make it all square as two minutes added time was shown. (2-2, 45 mins)

HT: Tamworth 2    2 Alfreton Town

Tamworth made a change at the break before getting the game back underway and a floated ball into the box rom the right caused some problems and a couple of Lambs corners around the 50 minute mark.
A long range shot from Wood forced Rowley to catch above his head on 53 and at the other end Morley found Knights how made Elliott drop and smother his shot on target.
Everington then struck from distance on the right and found the top of the net rather than the goal itself,
Some good forward play involving most of the Lambs in the top half of the pitch ended with a skewed shot from Morley, but the build up was encouraging and Elliott restarted play with a long kick which fell to Everington who cleared the away end by some distance.
Shaw was booked following a bit or arm linking and pulling and shoving in the centre circle on 66. And Burns threw himself in the way of Robertson’s shot that looked goalbound, a minute later, to conceded the corner.
Unable to continue on the field, Styche made way for Reid on 76 and went straight in to the changing rooms for treatment.
Knights and Taylor both saw close range shots blocked and cleared as the minutes ticked down and with one of normal time to play Westcarr latched onto the ball after Daniels low, left sided cross had been half cleared, and fired it into the bottom left corner through a crowded box (2-3, 89 mins)
Three minutes added time was shown at the end of the game, but there was no way back for The Lambs who suffered their fourth defeat on the trot.
