Lambs fall to solitary strike
24 July 2007
Despite hitting the bar and crossbar in the first half, Tamworth lost their for the first time in pre-season when Robbie Beards slotted home for newly promoted Brackley (to the British Gas Premier) after 38 minutes.
Matt Williams was lively in a first half that Tamworth took to their hosts. He struck for goal on 28 and 31 but was denied first by the post and then by the home keeper who could only parry his driven effort.
Garerth Sheldon's free kick on the half hour mark cannoned back off the bar and Tony Thorpe was unlucky with a header after just 12 and couldn't capitalise on a under hit back pass a minute after the home home side had taken the lead.
In the second half, boss Gary Mills started with the eleven that had finished the first period but it was Brackely who almost doubled their lead 10 minutes in. The Lambs had Micheal Briscoe to thank for a clearance off the line from the home side's third corner of the second half.
Dave Bampton struck an effort over the bar from long range on 77 before Brackley missed a good chance on 89 but missed the target from 12 yards after a defence splitting move.
Justin Jackson went agonisingly close at the death with a header which went the wrong side of the post.
