Lambs fall to Red Devils
17 April 2010
Tamworth, with 60 travelling fans, journeyed to the Broadfield Stadium, Crawley knowing that a positive result would guarantee Blue Square Premier status for next season.
Gary Mills selected the same starting eleven that had won a point against Luton last Saturday.
In a largely uneventful first half chances were at a premium in a typical end of season tie.
Tamworth managed just one shot at goal before the break when Bradley Pritchard hit a rising effort over the bar in the fifth minute.
Thomas Pinault and Ben Smith were off target with their efforts for the home side as both teams struggled to take control until on 23 Eddie Hutchinson tested Danny Alcock for the first and only time with a header from a corner which the Tamworth keeper took at full stretch.
In the second half the game opened up and Matthew Langston cleared the bar with a shot on 53 before the home side were awarded a dubious penalty on 58 following Michael Wylde's foul on Charles Adameno who made the most of the defender's touch as he entered the box. Danny Forrest despatched the penalty high to Alcock's right, to give the home side the lead (1-0, 58 mins).
Shaw picked up a booking on the hour and a triple substitution was made by The Lambs shortly afterwards pushing Nick Wright up front alongside Isyeden Christie.
But the home side doubled their lead with a quality finish from Ben Smith who curled the ball into the top corner of the net (0-2, 64 mins)
Nick Wright forced Nick Jordan to make his first save with a lobbed shot on 69 at the other end Pinault struck a shot which was deflected wide and Hutchinson's header from the corner was cleared off the line.
Adameno flashed an effort wide of the mark on 77 and Christie's shot was deflected into the side netting shortly after which won a corner, but Michael Blackwood cleared the bar with the resulting shot.
Wylde became the second Lambs player to enter the ref's notebook for dissent on 78 and Pritchard joined him four minutes later for the same reason. Chris Smith then became the fourth player in the book on 87.
Tamworth forced successive flag kicks and almost scored from one of them, but Jordan stopped Des Lyttle's header on the line with a couple of minutes to go and Adameno struck the outside of the post at the other end in stoppage time.
Wright hooked the ball wide of the mark as the seconds ticked away and Pritchard and Adameno clashed as the final whistle blew.
