Lambs fall to Pilgrims

FT: Boston United 3    1 Tamworth

06 January 2018

Andy Morrell made no changes to the squad that travelled to York Street to take on the Pilgrims on their own turf. Tamworth had recorded a 2-1 victory in the reserve fixture earlier in August, but no Lambs side had ever won at Boston in the previous nine attempts under eight managers since 1966.

United got the game underway with Tamworth kicking away from the away end but an early clash of heads between Jones and Bennett left the Lambs defender shaken and deemed unable to continue so was replaced by Reid.
For the second time in the game the ball had to be replaced at the request of the referee due to it being under inflated, Hemmings took advantage of a gap in the back to run into a shooting position on the left of the box on 11 but struck well wide of the mark.
Former Lamb Keane struck from distance on 12 and Jezeph was equal to it, while Stewart at the other end was beaten by Powell’s shot from the left of the area but the ball went out past the far post.
A Hemmings freekick on 15 was headed behind by Morley and the same Pilgrim took a short corner but the danger was cleared.
A deep freekick was headed high over the bar by Thompson on 22 but the same player was successful with a close range turn and finish after a second deadball was not dealt with less than 60 seconds later. (0-1, 23 mins)
A brave mid air parry / save from Jezeph prevented a Boston attack on 27 and on 29 Rollins drilled the ball low across the box but Thompson was unable to meet it.
On 32 Knights picked up a booking for booting the ball away and Hemmings struck the dead ball low towards the near post forcing Jezeph to push it out for a corner, which came to nothing.
Tamworth enjoyed possession around the 35 minutes mark but still found it hard to get into the final third as the home side defended strongly.
A rasping drive from Reid was chested away by Steward on 40 and Knights clipped the ball back into the box from the right but it fell to Burns who hit a defenders shot well wide of the target. Whalton put himself in the way of Hemmings cross on 42 and Jezeph took the corner at height.
On 42 a foul on Taylor set up a dead ball which Kettle diverted towards the target, but saw it cleared by Boston, and the home side sprinted to the opposite end with Rollins crossing from the right.
Burns was on hand to head it away though and take the game into added time.
Reid then burst through the back of the home defence and pulled it into the box for Knights, but it was cleared as quickly as the move started and the half time whistle blew.

HT: Boston United 1    0 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted proceedings and the home side went on the attack almost immediately pushing The Lambs back into their own half.
However on 49 Verma got his head into a ball into the box and it was heading goalward but a Boston defender got in the way as Kettle readied himself to pounce from close range.
The second Boston goal came on 52 though when Burns was dispossessed on the left edge of the area by Hemmings and the Pilgrim turned before drilling it low into the bottom right of the goal. (0-2, 52 mins)
Thompson beat the attentions of Ricketts off to get into the box and fire a shot on goal high took a deflection past the far post on 54.
It was 3-0 to the home side on 63 when Morely brought down Thompson as he made a dash into the box and Hemmings stepped up, sent Jezeph the wrong way and notched his second of the afternoon (0-3, 63 mins)
Tamworth pulled one back on 73 following Knights persistence to feed Verma down the right who drilled it into the six yard area and Reid finished from close range. (1-3, 78 mins)
Hemmings looked for his hattrick on 84 but shot low at the Lambs defence from the left and had to be content with a corner which was headed wide of the far post.
Abbott linked with Thompson on 84 and Jezeph had to leave his comfort zone to clear the ball with an unorthodox save with his legs.
Four minutes added time was shown at the end of the game which ended with no further incident.
