Lambs fall in Kent
18 March 2006
Tamworth travelled to Gravesend and northfleet with boss Mark Cooper suffering another selection nightmare with Tommy Johnson and Matt Redmile ruled out through injury and both Adie Smith and Dave Bampton out through suspension.
Liam Daish's mid table Gravesend side were playing for team pride and a high league finish, but Cooper threw youngster Craig Reid into the starting XI alongside Danny Davidson.
Tamworth battled hard against a tricky Gravesend side who caused The Lambs a number of problems, but Jamie Smith's 43rd minute lob over Sean Bowles gave the home side the edge at half time.
Tamworth had been denied a penalty earlier in the half when Reid was hauled to the ground in the area enraging the Lambs' dugout.
With results going against them elsewhere in the league, things went from bad to worse for The Lambs on the hour when Alan Neilson conceded a freekick which Scott Gooding fired in from the right. James Smith flicked the ball on and Jimmy Jackson headed home from the right of the six yard box to leave the Lambs with a mountain to climb. (0-2)
Danny Davidson perhaps should have done better when he tried to turn a header goalward on 69 from Carl Heggs' cross shortly after boss Cooper had sent on Richard Dryden and Craig Reid saw a shot saved a few minutes later.
In a last ditch bid to get something from the trip south, Cooper put on Bob Taylor for his first appearance since he limped off against Canvey back in November 2005, replacing Reid with 10 to go.
But The Lambs could not find any way back and the game ended 2-0 to 'Fleet and a last minute equaliser for Altrincham at Southport kept Cooper's men off the bottom spot in the league making the game against 'Port next Saturday one of massive proportions.
