Lambs fall besides the seaside

FT: Southport 3    0 Tamworth

10 March 2018

After the last gasp disappointment at league leaders Salford in midweek, Mike Fowler brought his Lambs squad to in form the seaside to face an in form midtable Southport side.

For the Lambs, Steph Morley came in for Jack Thomas and the penalty incident at Moor Lane cost Zack Kotwica a spot in the team.
With Brad Reid out on loan Dan Jezeph took a spot on the bench.
Kevin Davies side was lead by the goalscoring exploits of club record signing Jason Gilchrist which had earned him an England C call up.
The Sandgrounders got the game underway in the first half with The Lambs attacking the away end where the travelling faithful huddled in the light rain.
Tamworth started the game on the front foot with Asante the obvious target man alongside the runs of Gray although areas of the pitch were already showing signs of damage in the wet conditions that had required the groundsman to vertidrain the pitch on Friday.
Morgan dragged a shot from 18 yards wide of the mark on 7 and play switched to the other end but Sharpe’s long throw was eventually cleared and Southport countered only for Charles to by denied by the Lambs defence in similar fashion.
A deep freekick from the centre circle was taken at height by Stevens on 13 and Charles struck a low effort wide of the mark on 14. Gray then found Knights on the right of the box on 15 but his shot was blocked by Richards some 10 yards in front of him.
Then, from almost nothing, Gilchrist exposed the fact that Burns had been drawn over the halfway line, received the ball down the left, cut in and with Jones in between him and goal he curled it into the bottom right (0-1, 22 mins)
Less than a minute later Charles picked up the ball on the right and fed it to Morgan who tried a tricky effort from 8 yards out and it probably would have beaten Stevens but thankfully it span up and out past the far post.
Lane spotted an opening from 30 yards on 28 but it skipped off the surface and went out past the left hand post by a couple of feet.
A Southport corner on 34 allowed Tamworth to break forwards over the half way line and Knights found himself in acres of space. He whipped the ball into the box looking for Asante but Worsnop was first to it and prevented the equaliser.
Gilchrist took a knock on 35 and needed lengthy treatment to his left foot / ankle on the field before leaving to replace his boot. On 40 Gray made headway down the left and appeared to be pulled back but the referee waved play on and he curled his shot past Worsnop but also up and over the target.
Richards flattened Asante 30 yards out on 43 and Knights stepped up to strike the deadball but it was cleared back to Burns and then Morley as Southport defended everything with a big boot.
As Shaw pushed the ball down the right he was upended and so Morley took the freekick but it was travelling fast and Jones couldn’t keep his header down.
Three minutes added time was shown at the end of the half and Burns whipped the ball in from the right for Sharpe to head at goal but his downward effort went wide of the far post by a couple of feet.
A long ball towards Sharpe was flicked behind for a corner on the left and Knights struck it into the area but Verma’s header was off target and the whistle blew.

HT: Southport 1    0 Tamworth

Tamworth got the game back underway and Southport came out with a more determined attitude which resulted in Kelly driving the ball into the box from the left on 48.
Cockerline got his foot to it and flicked it across the box and past the far post. Osborne struck low but straight at Stevens on 52 and as Gilchrist pushed over the halfway line on 52 Morley brought him down and picked up a yellow card for his efforts which left the striker needing treatment and ultimately had to be carried off and replaced.
Tamworth made a change too, on 55, bringing Powell into the game for the remainder at the expense of Sharpe. Southport doubled their lead on the hour though when a long ball forward to Charles was controlled first time and he burst into the box and cut right before slotting it home from 12 yards (0-2, 60 mins)
Taylor replaced Knights quickly after but it was getting increasingly difficult to forge openings.
Southport notched their third with relative ease on 69 through Priestley’s close range finish after an angled drive from sub Doyle was blocked and partially saved but popped up a yard out and he took the opportunity to make it 3-0 to the home side. (0-3, 69 mins)
Gray brought down Richards as he advanced over the halfway line on 79 and picked up a booking for his efforts which clearly angered the home side and a mini melee ensured as the card was shown.
When Powell was brought down on route to goal Morley floated the freekick into the box and despite Jones throwing himself at the half chance it went out past the far post.
Five minutes added time was shown at the end of the game and Southport nearly made it four but Shaw was quick to get back and prevent the final shot from Dawson.
Dawson threaded the ball right for Osborne on 94 and his shot was straight at Stevens and allowed Tamworth to break forwards and force a corner on the left.
Verma got his head onto the deadball, but could only direct it over the bar from a few yards out under pressure from a couple of close Southport defenders.
Dawson struck a shot from distance on 95 but again it was straight at the Lambs keeper and after a last freekick from Morley the whistle blew on the sixth successive away game without a point, and ninth successive game without a victory.
