Lambs fall at The Shay

FT: Halifax Town 3    1 Tamworth

14 October 2006

Lambs boss Mark Cooper made no changes to the starting eleven that defeated Grays Athletic 4-2 at The Lamb on Tuesday night. The only change to the starting 16 was that Matt Williams returned from suspension and took his managers place on the bench as The Lambs looked to continue the winning feeling at The Shay.

Taiwo Atieno had a great chance with just three minutes gone after Steve Burton had seen his pass charged down, but the Lambs frontman shot wide of the far post from the right of the area.
Halifax then created a fine opening but Matthew Foster screwed his shot wide after the home side had split the Lambs defence. But Tamworth countered and Atieno perhaps should have done better, bursting to the area and beating the last defender only to fire a tame shot at Town ‘keeper Craig Mawson on 7.
Halifax took the lead on 11 minutes via a mistimed header from Sean Bowles. He left his area to head the ball clear, only to see it drop to Steve Torpey who made no mistake in lifting the ball over the Lambs keeper as he scampered back into his area. The Tamworth defence should really have not put him in the situation as they should have cleared the danger and Bowles will wonder why his back line didn’t deal with the incoming threat in the first place. (0-1)
Adie Smith found himself in usually uncharted waters on 19 minutes and managed to get a header towards goal from a high ball in the box but it went wide of the post and Smith had to receive treatment to a cut to his forehead.
Halifax almost bagged a second on 22 minutes but it took a clearance off the line by Tom Kemp to deny them. The ball came back from Torpey on the left and Lewis Killeen smashed straight at Kemp and ricocheted out for a corner - all this happened with the Lambs just having 10 men on the field as treatment to Adie Smith continued.
Halifax extended their lead on 34 minutes via the head of Ryan Sugden. The home side broke from their own half and when Killeen found Martin Foster he made space and crossed from the left for Sugden who was excellently placed to head home at the far post. (0-2)
To their credit Tamworth continued to push forward and won a penalty on 42 minutes when Tyrone Thompson handled under pressure from Gavin McAllum. Steve Burton duly stepped up and shot straight down the middle to beat Mawson and reduce the deficit (1-2)

HT 1-2

Cooper gambled with a half time substitution of Williams for Harban and changed formation to 4-3-3 to give The Lambs more attacking options.
But
Halifax made it look far too easy on 49 with a well worked move from the half way line. Killeen fed Sugden who squared for Torpey to all but tap home unchallenged from 5 yards out. (1-3)
In a rare Lambs attack on 77 Bradley Thomas shot from distance only to see it hit the underside of the bar and rebound to safety, but it had been Halifax who had been the better of the two sides and had the post not got in the way, it could well have been 4-1 when Martin Foster’s corner slipped through Bowle’s hands and rebounded to safety off the wood work.
