Lambs fall at Haig Avenue

FT: Southport 1    0 Tamworth

04 November 2006

The Lambs travelled to the North West coast to bottom of the league Southport in a crunch league fixture. The hosts had won only two of all their games so far this season, while Tamworth were on the back of a good FA Cup victory and were feeling buoyant ahead of the trip to Burton in the cup next weekend.

Cooper welcomed back Adie Smith, Tom Kemp and Bradley Thomas with Ryan Laight, and Kyle Storer taking spaces on the bench, but there was no room for Michael Tuohy who had featured against Harrogate the previous Saturday.

Early chances came The Lambs way via Matt Williams who saw his run to goal blocked by an advancing Ryan Robinson in the Southport goal and also through Taiwo Atieno who rounded Robinson but had his route to the near post cut out by the home defence.
A last ditch tackle by Tom Kemp denied Paul Tait a strike at Jose Veiga and Carl Baker headed wide when well placed as both sides tried to get to grips with the game with Tamworth edging it slightly on possession in the opposition's half.
As the half went on, The Sandgrounders and The Lambs found ways through the opposition's defences but couldn’t make anything count. Williams and Atieno created problems for Robinson at one end, while Tait and Southport captain Boyd both looked dangerous going forward for the home side.
On 41 Veiga brought down Tony Gray as he burst through on goal. The Lambs keeper rushed out of his area and upended Gray en-route to what was almost certainly the opening strike but thankfully for Tamworth he escaped with a yellow card.

HT: 0-0

Cooper made two changes early into the second period, with Steve Burton and Jon Stevenson replacing fellow strikers Matt Williams and Taiwo Atieno on 54.
Neither side could force their way into any sort of scoring opportunity with both defences holding strong, until on 65 when Tony Gray tried to flick the ball past Veiga but didn’t get enough purchase on it and the Lambs' keeper collected easily.
Gray tried his luck again on 66 and forced a corner which went short and when Carl Baker crossed from the right, Liam Blakeman headed home at the far post to give Southport the lead. (0-1)
McGrath forced Robinson into a telling save from a well struck free kick shortly after as Tamworth looked for a way back into the game, but it took some last ditch defending to halt Southport’s forays forward as they showed no fear in looking for a second goal.
Substitute Sean Paterson forced Veiga into a stop on 79 and Simon Weaver cleared off the line as the ball rebounded off the ‘keeper high and goalward.
Weaver saw his close range header saved on the line in the dying minutes but Southport held out to record a rare home win.
