Lambs defeated by Spartans

FT: Blyth Spartans 4    2 Tamworth

12 August 2017

After Tuesday’s victory at Leamington, Andy Morrell made no changes to the starting eleven for the third game running as his Tamworth side went in search of back to back wins.

There was a buoyant atmosphere all round at Croft Park, the home of newly promoted Blyth Spartans, after a 9 years gap between visits to the most North Easterly club The Lambs have ever faced and a decent turnout on the terraces to cheer the sides on.
Blyth kicked off the game which started at a quick pace up and down the lush green turf.
The first chance came on 7 for the home captain Dale who picked the ball out of midfield and struck from 30 yards.
Rowley could only parry it and it needed his defence to clear it away.
Dale then tried his luck with a curling shot from a similar distance but it took a deflection and went out for a corner which was headed away.
Upton did very well to get down and had the ball off the toes of Maguire on 13 as he sprinted through a gap in the back five.
Tamworth’s first chance came on 14 and Styche took it into the box with a deft touch before slotting it past Jameson into the bottom right past the exposed keeper Jameson. (1-0, 14 mins)
But three minutes later the home side equalised when they split the back line down the right wing and Hutchinson powerfully side footed home from 6 yards out. (1-1, 17 mins) Blyth went close in similar fashion on 23 but the ball was smashed wide of the mark from 12 yards.
Verma and Taylor combined to force a corner on 26 but Morley’s flagkick was too long and Blyth broke but played the wrong ball to release their waiting strikers.
Maguire gave the home side the lead fr the first time in the season, turning The Lambs defence inside out on the edge of the box before lifting it into the roof of the net past Rowley (1-2, 28 mins)
Rivers set up Maguire with an angled header which on another day may have posed more of a threat, but took a deflection out for a corner on 30.
On 35 Taylor looked up and went for goal but he didn’t spot Burns in an acre of space on the right and the shot went over the bar.
Rivers crossfield ball into the box evaded everyone except Hopson at the far post and Rowley was forced to concede a corner which went short and this time Rowley took Hopson’s ball at height.
Styche was set free one on one against Jameson but the keeper advanced and blocked his opportunity as two minutes added time was shown.
The Lambs forced a late corner but Lane’s header was taken by Jameson and the whistle blew.

HT: Blyth Spartans 2    1 Tamworth

The Lambs restarted proceedings and started positively, chasing a single goal deficit.
On 50 Morley found the head of Burns past the far post but he nod back was cleared and then on 52 Upton found Knights but his centre was too long for Taylor and Jameson smothered it.
Morley’s header was deflected behind for a corner on 55 and Jones was just beaten to it at the far post allowing Blyth to break downfield.
The initial ball in from Maguire was not cleared sufficiently and Rivers pounced with a low strike past Rowley from 10 yards (1-3, 56 mins)
From the restart Tamworth advanced and Styche was upended by Buddle on 58 to give the striker a chance of a second goal of the afternoon and he duly struck the penalty into the roof of the net past Jameson to reduce the arrears (2-3, 59 mins)
Jones conceded a corner on 62 with a back header that was perhaps meant for Rowley but it came to nothing.
Jones was unable to prevent Maguire from going past him and conceded a penalty in the process on 66 which Hopson converted, sending Rowley the wrong way. (2-4, 66 mins)
Taylor was replaced by Reid on 69 as Tamworth changed the front line around.
Styche burst into the area and flicked it past Jameson on the left of the box on 73 and as the ball ricocheted up Reid was unable to direct his header into the empty net.
After a double Lambs change, Wrightson forced Rowey to protect his goal with a driving effort from the left of the box on 81.
Rivers took the ball into the box from the right on 82 and somehow managed to miss the target, placing the ball across the face of goal. A great stop by Jameson denied Reid’s strike on the right of the box after good work from Styche set him up while at the other end Blyth nearly added a fifth but Rowley denied them once again and Maguire tried an audacious over head kick from the rebound which went over the target.
Knights hit a hopeful shot from distance on 86 which went just wide of the mark and forced Jameson into a low save as four minutes added time was shown. Rivers nearly pounced on the loose ball after Rowley had made a fingertip stop but the keeper made himself impossible to beat at his near post.
There was time for one last go at goal by Rivers but his shot was blocked and the final whistle blew.
