Lambs comeback to make another point
28 February 2015
After the 4-3 victory over Oxford and a week to recuperate Andy Morrell took his side to Kellamergh Park and made one change to the starting eleven, with Javan Vidal coming back into the line up as Brendon Daniels sat out suspended.
The home side started the game second in the league six points ahead and two places and two games in hand over Tamworth, but all that could change over 90 minutes.
Mettam and Hibbert linked well in the second minute to force a left sided corner but it was a poor flag kick and home captain Barnes cleared.
On 8 Allen struck the left hand post for with a low shot from the edge of the area that saw Belshaw beaten low to his right and it the rebound was cleared.
Injury to Flyde’s Barned saw an early change that brought former Lamb Lloyd into action.
A superb save from Belshaw denied Allen’s curling shot into the far corner on 17 and then Lloyd struck from distance but he missed the target as his shot whistled past the left hand post.
Belshaw smothered a deflected shot from Lloyd in the left of the box on 20 and Allen tried his luck on 25 with a strike similar to his earlier one but he cleared the target enough for Belshaw not to be bothered about it, but also removed a strip light form the covered terrace roof in the process!
On 36 it took a good block by Sampson to deny a close range shot from Hannigan and keep it 0-0 and Allens follow up rose over the target from 20 yards out.
Booth struck a low shot from the edge of the area on 39 and it rolled at pace wide of the left hand upright bringing sighs of expectation from the home fans.
Clarke’s foul on Allen set up Sumner with a dead ball on the right wing on 41 and Wilson got the slightest of flicks to the travelling ball only to see Belshaw somehow parry it away and keep the scoreline at 0-0.
Blinkhorn then put a diving header towards goal and it didn’t hit the target before one minute added time was shown and the whistle blew on a somehow goalless first half.
Tamworth got the game back underway and in the 49th minute Lloyd made some space for himself in the left of the area but couldn’t get his boot around the ball fully and fired into the side netting.
Allen received the ball on the right wing and sent a deep ball into the box which Blinkhorn was unable to control but it went to Lloyd who turned on a sixpence and rolled it into the far corner on 50 for the opening goal. (0-1)
Lloyd made a nuisance of himself down the left side on 58 and the ball found its way to Allen but he was called offside as he netted from close range so it remained 0-1.
Booth was denied by the reflexes of Belshaw on 62 after the number seven’s low strike towards the near post seemed to be heading for the home side’s second.
In the first real attack of the game for The Lambs, Mettam equalised from close range with an acrobatically taken overhead strike from 6 yards out after great work down the right wing saw the front man leap up with his back to goal and send the ball past Hinchliffe to level the tie on 65 (1-1)
Booth was inches away from finishing a right wing ball by Allen on 68 and Mettam picked a booking for a late challenge on 70.
Mettam then made way for Styche on 73 and keeper Hinchliffe left his area to try and clear the ball on 74 but Hibbert was unable to do anything with the bouncing ball which went out for a corner.
Sampson got his head to the flag kick but it went high over the terracing and play resumed with a goalkick.
Vidal sliced himself through the Fylde defence like a knife through butter on 76 but was unable to get a shot away before a tackle denied him, and the corner went long past the far post.
Clarke got his head to a left wing cross on 78 and forced a low save from Hinchliffe before Vidal was booked for a foul on Lloyd on 82 and the freekick was drilled into the box but play had to be stopped following a challenge on TJ that left him on the floor for a while requiring treatment before hobbling off and back on again when play resumed.
Taylor brought some fresh legs to proceedings in place of Thornton with three minutes to play and four minutes added time were shown.
A home corner, from a deflected freekick was cleared and despite a great deal of huff and puff to try and forge a last minute winner both sides took a point away from the game.
