Lambs come back three times for a point

FT: Tamworth 3    3 Southport

02 December 2017

After Tuesday night’s exit from The FA Trophy Andy Morrell made one change for the visit of Southport to the EST Electrical Services Stadium. Callum Powell came in for Regan Upton who took a place on the bench.
The Sandgrounders, who also went out of the same competition in midweek made seven changes to their starting eleven and came to The Lamb on the back of a 14 game run without a victory in any competition after starting the season well.

In wet misty rain Southport got the game underway with The Lambs attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half.
The visitors took the lead in the 5th minute when Sampson latched onto the ball down the left and drilled it into the centre for Gilchrist to powerfully sidefoot home from 12 yards (0-1)
Kotwica forced a corner on 7 which Knights put into the danger area and despite a number of Lambs players teeing up a shot it ended up going high over the target as Kotwica tried to fire it home..
Another corner on the left was forthcoming on 9 when Powell drilled a low ball from the wings and Knights flag kick dropped for Jones but he was unable to turn it goalward a few yards past the far post.
A good ball from the right from Burns on 21 was met by the head of Kotwica in a central position but he couldn’t direct it on target.
Knights squeezed through the Southport defence on the half hour but was unable to get the ball past Worsnop and it was cleared quickly amid shouts of ‘backpass’ as the ball richocheted around by the near post.
Knights push towards the Southport goalline forced a corner on the right on 32 which Morley sent left footed onto the head of Lane and Kotwica helped it on towards goal with another header but it dropped on top of the bar and went out of play.
Hallam tried his luck from distance on 34 and Rowley caught it at chest height and released it upfield. It fell to Verma and his pass to Taylor gave him a sight on goal but his shot rose over the target from 25 yards.
Deeney was booked for a challenge on the half way line and the home crowd didn’t agree with the decision which put the midfielder on 5 cards for the season meaning a forthcoming suspension was imminent.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half and with it a mix up at the back gave Southport a corner which went long and was cleared upfield by Deeney as the half time whistle blew.

HT: Tamworth 0    1 Southport

Tamworth restarted proceedings and Powell quickly had a shot which Worsnop gathered low in the centre of the goal.
Southport countered quickly and Gilchrist chipped it home despite Rowley’s best efforts to put some more life into the Southport drum behind the goal (0-2, 46 mins)
Morley curled a shot wide from the edge of the box on 50 and Kotwica whipped a ball into the box from the right which took a deflection for a corner on the left on 54 but the flag kick came to nothing due to a foul in the box.
Reid came on for Knights on the hour alongside Taylor up front but it was Hallam who struck from distance on 64 narrowly missing the target at the Southport end.
Morley fed Reid on 65 and a tackle forced a corner on the left which fell to Powell and his shot was way off target.
Reid burst forward on 66 but his path was blocked and a corner on the right was the result, Morley saw his ball headed back to him for another which went long and back to Burn on the halfway line before working its way back to Taylor who struck from the left into the arms of Worsnop.
Tamworth got on the scoresheet on 71 when Powell’s ball into the box was headed away from goal by Kotwica but rebounded off Southport’s Jones and past Worsnop to go down as an own goal in the Lambs favour (1-2)
Four minutes later the visitors restored their lead as Gilchrist secured his hat-trick with a right footed drive from the right of the box into the far corner (1-3) Reid did well to get the ball off the Southport defence 25 yards from goal on 77 but was beaten back to it and a corner was awarded on the right which came to nothing.
Powell made a mazy run on the left on 70 and attacked the box before unleashing a drive which went wide of the far post.
Powell was instrumental in pulling The Lambs back into the game on 81 with another strong run down the left and his low ball into the centre was finished strongly by Reid from a few yards out. (2-3)
Worsnop was then booked for holding onto the ball. Gilchrist looped a header onto the corner of bar and post on 83 in a rare moment when Tamworth were not pushing forwards.
The Lambs were level on 90 when Burns chipped the ball into the box and Taylor flicked a header past Worsnop to raise the roof on the ground and set up a tense last 3 added minutes (3-3) which ran out with The Lambs unable to snatch a dramatic winner.
