Lambs bucked by United
17 April 2012
Billed as the biggest game in Telford's recent history, Tamworth travelled to The New Buck's Head knowing that a win for the home side would secure them another season in the Conference Premier. And after the initial fixture had been abandoned due to the weather, the free entry policy lent itself to a larage crowd turning out to cheer on both sides.
Unfortunately, 'usual service' with regard to official site match reports was not possible on the evening.
Radio Shropshire broadcasted live from the game for fans who couldn't make the journey.
Ultimately, Phil Trainer's second-half goal after 77 minutes secured AFC Telford United's place in the Blue Square Bet Premier for next season. Trainer scored what proved to be the Bucks' winner, drilling in Chris Sharp's cross from close range.
Ryan Brooke went close for the hosts with a long-range strike while Liam McDonald and Iyseden Christie both had efforts saved by Telford's Ryan Young.
The result means only Hayes and Yeading or Newport, who drew with Darlington, can mathematically go down.
However, Newport have all but secured a place in non-league's top tier next season as they hold a plus-22 goal difference and a game in hand over relegation rivals Hayes.
