Lambs bow out to Bluebirds
20 October 2012
BARROW AFC progressed to the FA Cup first round proper after an excellent 2-0 win over Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Tamworth at Holker Street.
The draw will be screened live on ITV at 1.30pm on Sunday, with all League One and Two clubs in the hat.
Tamworth dominated the first 25 minutes and almost took the lead when Barrow keeper Danny Hurst failed to reach a long-throw and, following a flick-on by a visiting player, Matt Flynn was forced to head it off the line.
Hurst made amends on 14 minutes with a superb point-blank stop to deny Tamworth's Lloyd Kerry the opening goal of the tie.
The Bluebirds, who continued to look nervous when defending corners and set-pieces, then began to improve in attack and, after a slick move on 26 minutes, midfielder Richie Baker volleyed over the bar from eight yards out.
Hurst, limping after an earlier challenge, made another smart stop shortly before half-time to keep out a low shot from George Baldock.
The Barrow keeper returned for the second half and saw his team take the lead on 53 minutes when neat passing from Alex-Ray Harvey and Baker set up a chance for Louis Almond who, from 17 yards out, almost put a hole in the back of the net.
Almond went close again on 77 minutes, before Hurst made an excellent one-handed save to keep out a shot by Adam Cunnington.
The Barrow keeper was called into action again four minutes later to claw out a Lee Hendrie free-kick that looked destined for the top corner.
The Bluebirds then scored a crucial second goal on 83 minutes when a terrible back-pass by Tamworth skipper Richard Tait fell short for keeper Tony Breeden. Barrow striker Adam Boyes nipped in, rounded the keeper, who was stranded 40 yards from goal, and ran it into an empty net.
The full-time whistle followed shorty after, with Barrow assistant manager Ashley Hoskin again treating home supporters to his on-pitch jig of joy.
Bluebirds manager Dave Bayliss named an unchanged side following a goalless home draw against Dartford. Sickness bug victim Joe Jackson was replaced on the bench by defender Tom Aldred.
Former England and Aston Villa midfielder Hendrie was selected in Tamworth's starting XI, with Blue Square Bet Premier top scorer Cunnington up front alongside Tommy Wright.
