Lambs beat Blues to set up tie against Blues!
06 November 2006
Two goals from Steve Burton and one from youth teamer Luke Keen were enough to see The Lambs through at Coles Lane in a chilly Birmingham Senior Cup tie.
Talking point from the game will be the appearance of goalkeeper Dale Belford, who, after announcing his wish to return to playing rather than just coaching last week, couldn't resist the call of the green jersey and made his first appearance for Tamworth since December 1995.
Steve Burton gave Tamworth the lead after 15 minutes, holding off the Sutton defence and firing past Dave Clarke from the edge of the area. (1-0)
Sutton equalised on 28 through Justin Rowe, whose shot took a fortuitous deflection and ballooned over Belford and in at the far post but the comeback was short lived as Keen headed home to restore Tamworth's lead two minutes later from a corner.
Jon Stevenson spurned a good header, putting it high on 47 and on 49 James Stark forced Belford into a good save while Graeme Law cleared acrobatically off the line on 52 to deny Sutton substitute James Clark.
Burton hit the bar on 58 after good play from The Lambs but scored his second of the evening on 69 with a right footed shot from the right of the area.
He then wasted the chance to record a rare Lambs' hat-trick by blasting the ball against Clarke's bar from the penalty spot after Kyle Storer had been felled on 87 and Richard Dryden, having a rare run-out, burst through the home defence with ease and looked odds on to score but took too long to shoot and Clarke collected.
