Lambs are deadball kings over Royals

FT: Sutton Coldfield Town 0    2 Tamworth

23 July 2019

On a hot and balmy Tuesday night, Tamworth travelled the short distance to Coles Lane to take on ‘local rivals’ Sutton Coldfield Town on their own 3G pitch and with a small number of players out or injured brought a trialist into the left back position.

Sutton Coldfield kicked off proceedings, but The Lambs had the first effort on goal through a low shot from Yafai.
At the other end on 8 a low shot from Sutton’s number 4 tested Singh.
Creaney met Beswick’s ball in from the left with a powerful header on 15 and it came back out off the near post and Obeng was unable to get the follow up on target.
With summer rain falling on the pitch, Creaney was involved again but in the wrong way on 23 picking up a pre-season booking for a challenge in the middle of the park.
Beswick lined up a freekick after Yafai had been upended don the half hour, earning Palmer a booking.
And he hit deadball gold once again, squeezing it past the keeper’s left and in off the right hand post. (1-0, 31 mins)
Yafai struck from distance straight at Williams in the home goal on 38 and both Gary Smith and opposing manager Neil Tooth shared a joke when things seemed to be conspiring against both sides before the half time whistle blew on proceedings.

The Lambs restarted the game but it was the home side who started on the front foot with Beresford striking from 18 yards over the bar on 48. Francis picked up a booking for a challenge on 50 to the obvious annoyance of Tooth.
Tamworth’s first real attack of the half resulted in a Creaney ball from the right and a looping header from Fry as the floodlights came on.
Obeng did well to get the ball into the box on the hour but was thwarted by Gwilliams and he tried to thread himself through the eye of the defence on 62 but found the going too hard.
At the other end, on 65, the Sutton sub (14) connected with a ball in from Francis, but was unable to direct it on target.
Fry tried his luck with a volley from 30 yards on 72 but his effort went wide of the left hand post.and it was the presence of Fry at the near post that saw The Royals concede a penalty after Reid put the ball in and Fry flicked it up and the referee spotted the infringement buy the home player. Creaney stepped up to slot the penalty home to make it 2-0 on 75.
Sutton made a number of additional changes as the game entered the final ten minutes.
Creaney hit the woodwork again with a shot from the edge of the area on 85 that clipped the top of the bar and went high and out of play.
