Lambs and Saints share the spoils

FT: St Neots Town 0    0 Tamworth

06 November 2018

On the back of The Lambs second win on the bounce, Tamworth travelled to Cambridgeshire to face The Saints for the first time in either club’s histories. Dennis Greene’s newest signing Gregg Smith made his debut at number 9 against one of Greene’s former clubs. Smith was the only change to the starting eleven from Saturday’s victory over Hitchin, while for the hosts, former Lamb Nabil Shariff took the same position.

St Neots got the game underway and both sides started positively without really threatening either box. Verma picked up the ball 20 yards out on 8 and struck low forcing Reynolds to drop and smother the shot.
The home side enjoyed a spell of possession over the next few minutes and corner from the left on 14 was headed clear under pressure.
Jemson was booked for a challenge on the half way line on 19. Bewsick spotted an opening from 20 yards on 23 but drilled his shot well wide of the mark, and when the Saints broke over the halfway line Gough picked up a booking for bringing Williams down as he tried to thread the ball through.
A long ball through from the Saints left back looked for the run of Shariff on 28 but it skipped through to Singh before he could get a boot to it and both sides reset themselves.
The striker then tried an over head kick from 18 yards but Singh was happy to watch it drop over his bar. Smith headed the ball home on 33 but the referee’s whistle had already blown and Worman saw his shot blocked for a corner on the left on 36.
Lait forced another left sided corner on 38 but Kettle’s directed header went wide of the mark and Waite wriggled through the back line but his shot was off target on 43.
He then escaped a booking after booting the ball away from the halfway line after the whistle had blown on 44 and one minute added time was shown which ended with no further incident.

After the two sets of fans swapped ends, Tamworth restarted proceedings and on 49 Waite struck a rising shot from the left of the box which Reynolds gathered at the second attempt.
Lait made way for Dunkley with less than 10 minutes of the half gone and Clement replaced Beswick three minutes later.
Gough’s left wing cross looked to be bound for Smith’s head at the back of the box on 58 but it whipped just over his jump.
Sembie-Ferris found a rare bit of space in the Lambs back line on 64 and struck a low effort which Singh dealt with and the home side continued to press with the aid of some long throw-ins from Herd into the heart of the box and on 72 Williams was booked for simulating a dive when under pressure from the Lambs defence.
On 76 Saints captain Knight was booked for bringing down Dunkley as he advanced over the halfway line.
Moore came on for the final 10, but Shariff nearly broke the deadlock with a right footed shot in the right of the box which rose over the corner of bar and post.
On 86 Stanley and Sembie-Ferris played a neat one two and the former drilled the ball across the box but thankfully for The Lambs there was no sliding finish from Shariff from 6 yards out.
Stanley sowed his pace down the right again on 88 but his deep cross was too long and was headed away.
Magunda was booked as three minutes added time was shown and The Lambs won a corner on the right but it came to nothing as Reynolds was not troubled by Waite’s header.
