Its Valentims day in the cup
13 September 2011
Marcus Law handed out five debuts in the starting eleven alongside six other squad members with first team experience although with Christie as a centre back it was not an instantly recognisable side.Playing in 1-11 numbered shirts from last season The Lambs kicked off towards the Castle End and on 2 Bottomer crossed from the right looking for Valentim, but his header was blocked.
A corner was won on 4 and played short but Patterson's shot was blocked on the edge of the box.
Cain found Shaw with a low pass to feet on 7 but his right footed shot whipped across the face of the goal without bothering Bulter.
An earlier injury to Patterson completely forced him from the field on 9 and brought Shearer in for an unexpected early debut.
Good forward movement was let down by off target shooting as the clock ticked around 15 and at the other end Collister got his first real touch when Overfield span on the edge of the box and curled straight at the keeper and a header from Bailey off a corner flashed across Colisters box shortly after.
Tulloch was allowed time and space to shoot on 21.
Butler pushed the ball over from a good strike from Shearer on 23 and Valentim made a nuisance of himself from the dead ball but was unable to get a shot on target.
Weemes pushed the ball short from 6 yards out to Shearer but he conspired to fire an inch wide of the mark on 27.
Valentim struck for goal with a hefty swing on the half hour and did well to almost control a floated pass in the next move, but both times Butler was in the right place to thwart him.
Weemes stole in and tried to prod past Butler on 34 but the keeper thwarted him and it was a similar outcome when Valentim shot from 18 yards on 40.
Christie took a knock just before the break and needed treatment before returning and the absence of a fourth official in this competition meant no indication of how long the half would last but it did eventually end goalless.
There were no changes at half time as the visitors kicked off but it was The Lambs who went close early on following good movement around the area.
The best chance came on 49 with Valentim turning in the area but lifting his effort over the bar.
With Francis without right boot and needing attention Christie put the ball out of play on 53 and he left the field to get treatment as the game went on without him.
Good play from Weemes to set up Shaw saw the latters shot blocked on the edge of the area on 57 and a corner was won but it came to nothing.
Then, there finally came a goal that had been threatened for an hour and it was unfortunate for Butler who fumbled a relatively tame effort and Valentim finished from 8 yards with relative ease (1-0, 61 mins)
A deep freekick was headed goalward by former Lamb and Boldmere captain Tom Stevenson on 72 but Collister took it gratefully at head height.
The Lambs made a couple of changes with a quarter of an hour to go and quickly won a corner on the right which was quickly followed by another quick one on the right but both were cleared.
Defending in numbers was required to prevent Boldmere from getting a shot away on 83 while at the other end Shearer's strike from the left cleared the conifers behind the Meadow Street End.
A good low strike from Overfield whisked past the right hand post on 87 and good chance fell to substitute Capaldi but his shot inside the box from a flick on inside the area didn't have the pace or direction to trouble Collister.
As the time passed well into the 90th minute Christie took a blow to the head shortly before the whistle blew.
