Honours shared in final pre-season run out
02 August 2008
Tamworth welcomed Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers to The Lamb for their final pre-season friendly and Tommy Wilson’s side included former TFC youngster Kane Hemmings in the squad that were playing a mini tour of the Midlands area.
Bradley Pritchard sat out with an ankle injury that he hoped would be OK for the big kick off at Droylsden on August 09 as boss Gary Mills continued with a side that had been pretty much unchanged during the warm up games.
An early chance came for the Lambs with Nick Wright having an initial shot and the ball came out to Gareth Sheldon who tried his luck from the right of the area. Keeper Lee Robinson couldn’t hold Sheldon’s drive and Wright was unlucky not to open the scoring from the rebound under pressure from the visiting defence.
On 5 Lee Hildreth unleashed a low drive from the left and again made Robinson look uncomfortable but he recovered his initial spill of the ball.
Alex Rodman almost brought an own goal out of Rangers on 17 as Alan Lowing diverted his well struck right wing curling cross onto his own bar and a minute or so later Martin Foster sent the ball through to Sheldon, but he dragged his shot wide of the mark after turning the last defender.
A rare effort direct at Lambs ‘keeper Will Puddy came on 19 via Rory Loy from distance as the visitors played a similar passing game to The Lambs without either having much luck in front of goal.
Wright opened the scoring on the half hour mark with his fifth pre-season strike latching onto a ball which evaded the home defence before slotting home from the edge of the area past Robinson (1-0)
Wright cut to the by-line on 34 and brought the ball back for Hildreth but he didn’t get enough purchase on the shot and the chance was cleared.
Michael Wylde blocked a good chance for John Fleck of Rangers on 38 as the latter shaped to shoot in the Lambs area and Chris Craig curled his effort over the corner of bar and post on 39.
Rangers won a penalty on 41 when Wylde caught the trailing leg of Lowing allowing Steven Lennon to step up and level the scores from the spot. (1-1)
A superb move by The Lambs almost got a goal back immediately, but Rodman blasted Wright’s delicate chip to the far post high over the target much to his obvious dismay.
Mills swapped Sheridan for Dale Warburton at half time and Tamworth pushed forward from kick off winning a corner on 48.
The ball dropped kindly for Rodman off the head of a Rangers defender and he struck a good shot which forced an even better save from Robinson but the resulting corner came to nothing.
Lennon burst onto a ball through which Wylde miscued as it ran through and fortunately for The Lambs his chip shot cleared the bar by a few inches.
A cool piece of skill by Warburton resulted in a freekick handball as he tried to flick the ball through and set up Craig McAughtrie with a freekick chance on the hour but his low drive went just wide of the post.
Sheldon fired a great header at Robinson on 64 from Hildreth’s right wing cross before Dean Lea came on for Wright.
Paul Emslie received a yellow card on 68 and was substituted shortly after as Tamworth pushed on from the freekick, winning a corner from McAughtrie’s deflected header.
Loy forced Puddy to defend his goal and concede a corner, pushing the ball over the bar from a tight angle on 77.
Lennon forced a great save from Puddy on 81 with a close range effort before The Lamb crowd roundly applauded the appearance of Hemmings for the final few minutes of the game.
Some fine play down the right almost brought a second Lambs goal on 88 but the Rangers defence forced Tamworth to push the ball around without getting a shot away and when one did come from Foster he found no way through the back four.
