Hayes two first half strikes sink Lambs
31 October 2009
Tamworth welcomed Hayes and Yeading to The Lamb for the first time in the visitors history and they arrived to a ground packed out as part of the Staffordshire Primary Trust fun day.
Gary Mills was forced to name two injured players on the bench as he looked to the rest of the squad to turn things around on the field and halt the six match losing streak.
After minutes silence in memory of former Lambs captain and trainer Ronnie Sims who passed away recently, Hayes and Yeading kicked off proceedings towards the Castle End.
The ball made it's way straight to keeper Alcock and his opposite number Overland got a similar touch shortly after as Sheridan tried to chase down a lob into the area.
With neither side having a particularly good run of form a win for either team was almost a necessity and Tamworth kept the pressure on for the first five minutes, but were unable to get a shot at Overland during this period causing the Hayes defence to work hard to clear the danger.
Briscoe, with the captains armband on, denied the run of Mulley on 7 and on 13 Tait was penalised for a foul by the Shed which gave Hayes a freekick on the left wing which Briscoe headed way. Briscoe was on hand again to boot a flicked header back into the area clear as the visitors pushed on and another freekick was blocked shortly after allowing The Lambs to put the pressure on.
But it was Hayes who took the lead through Mulley on 16 after a one two with Sean Canham allowed him to finish coolly from 6 yards. (0-1, 16 mins)
Tamworth threatened from a lofted ball into the area on 19 from Blackwood but the Hayes back four cleared and moved play into the Lambs half, winning another freekick 35 yards out on 20. Green tried a short tapped freekick but Sheridan anticipated well and blocked almost at the spot the kick was taken allowing Tamworth to attack, and Lake-Gaskin met Blackwood's cross with a fine header, but it went over the bar and on 22 Shaw put a good low ball into the area, but it took a deflection off a Hayes defender and wrong footed Pritchard, closing in at the near post.
Lake-Gaskin won a corner on 24 but it came to nothing and on 28 Tamworth fell to a second strike. Fitzgerald finished the move with a thumping shot from a central position inside the area, but it was made by a run from Allen-Page who made his way from the half way line evading a number of challenges on the way before firing a low ball into the box for his team mate to plant home. (0-2, 28 mins)
James made a similar run on 31 into the box from the right flank, and found Wylde strong enough deny him the run.
Blackwood lifted the ball goalward from a central position about 20 yards out after a great knock forward from Pritchard on 33 but his looping effort which had Overland well beaten drifted inches wide of the right hand upright.
Sheridan was brought down on the right wing on 34 allowing Shaw to step up and put his freekick into the area but Overland punched it behind for a flag kick and when Briscoe's far post header came out to Russell he tried a dipping shot but put it wide of the far post.
On 36 the visitors threatened again Marc Canham fed Fitzgerald who struck a right footed shot at Alcock and he pushed it away them smothered it.
Cadmore received a booking for a bad tackle on Sheridan on the half way line on 38 and on 42 Pritchard rose to head a ball into the area from the left of midfield from Blackwood but got his direction all wrong and put it harmlessly behind.
Pritchard had the ball into the net on 43 but his lob of Overland had already been flagged offside in the build up.
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half and although Tamworth pushed on an it looked like Sheridan would fire home a loose ball at the far post when Overland came but missed his catch, he put his effort high over the bar from 8 yards out.
Gary Mills made two changes at half time, bringing Ulker and Gaughran into the game for MacKenzie and Lake-Gaskin and The Lambs kicked off with Sheridan up front flanked by Blackwood and Ulker.
Overland was forced to tip the ball over the bar on 46 from a Shaw strike from outside the area.
Russell fell under pressure in the area on 48 but no penalty was given as he tried to reach the loose ball.
After an earlier tackle on Sheridan was not given as a foul the Lambs midfielder was penalised for a similar challenge on Ruby on 54 and on 56 Blackwood was penalised for a tame tackle on Green.
Tamworth won a freekick of their own on 59 35 yards from goal which Blackwood took, but Overland punched clear.
Ulker burst onto a back heel from Sheridan on the hour and the former put a good low ball into the box which Blackwood met but was unable to turn goalward and from a throw on the left, in the next move, Ulker flashed a shot over the bar from 6 yards.
The Lambs won a corner on 63 and pressed forward but were denied and won another corner from Overland's punch, but were unable to capitalise on the advantage.
Wylde was brought down by Allen-Page on 67 for second booking for the visitors but Briscoe's header spun in to the arms of the Hayes keeper.
Ulker was penalised for a challenge on Allen-Page with a yellow card on 70 which left the Hayes player requiring treatment and after a bit of a kafuffle Gary Mills, who stayed well away from the incident on the field, found himself sent to the stands and Sheridan also booked.
Hayes restarted play with a freekick but Ulker was called over again for a challenge a minute later and The Lambs won a corner on 77 which missed the heads of Briscoe and Ulker and sailed out by the clubhouse.
Sheridan ran to block a clearance by Overland on 80 and when the ball fell to Russell he tried to lob it into the net over the covering defenders but his shot dropped agonizingly over the bar and into the goal netting and on 81 Briscoe sent a low ball into the area from the right wing but it evaded everyone, on both sides.
Hayes broke and Sean Canham saw his shot from the left of the box headed off the line by Wylde.
Little then broke down the left and looked for Mulley in the centre of the area with a low cross which he met, but controlled with his hand as it popped up.
Ulker tried to get a shot away as the clocked ticked towards full time, but was crowded out by the Hayes defence and only managed to push the ball to Overland.
Another good run from Mulley set up Little from his back heel as five minutes added time was shown but the latter hit his effort over the bar from 12 yards.
In the dying minutes Sean Canham saw his close range finish well saved by Alcock and Lilttle was unable to follow up the rebound off the near post as the final whistle blew on another Lambs defeat.
