Good show against The Daniels
13 July 2007
Gary Mills' squad's first friendly in front of a paying audience was well worth the admission fee against Unibond Premier side Stamford.
Although Mills fielded, in effect, two sides at The Vic Couzens Stadium, it was hard to tell where one finished and the other started as it was easy to see that the pre-season training was paying off.
In the first half Gareth Sheldon crossed right footed on 28 minutes for Anthony Robinson to leap highest and nod home an inch perfect header inside the near post to give The Lambs the lead.
There was some good play between Tony Thorpe and Robinson throughout the first 45 and the presence of Gerry Taggart in defence was evident as his no- nonsense style didn't go unnoticed by the home side (or the referee!).
In the second half Tamworth came forward more and, had it not been for the offside flag, would have been three up with an hour gone. Thorpe ended a good move with a sliding finish at the far post only to be denied by the flag and seconds later Justin Jackson was denied by the linesman again after going clean through.
But it didn't take long for the score to become 2-0 when Thorpe recieved the ball from Kyle Storer to go one on one with the Stamford 'keeper and round him before slotting home.
Dominic Langdon looked cool and collected in defence alongside Michael Briscoe and when Jackson made a mazy run on the right on 75, Thorpe was unlucky not to finish his chance.
A flowing move between Thorpe and Jackson set up Matty Williams with an 'easy' finish on 81 but he struck the effort over the bar, before making amends two minutes later - neatly sidefooting home another good move.
So all in all a good display by the Lambs squad as they look ahead to a trip to Gedling on Tuesday night.
