Goalless draw means trip to London on Tuesday night
04 February 2006
Mark Cooper, was without Scott Rickards (cup tied), Peter Folkes (injured) and Danny Davidson (suspended) for the visit of Dagenham and Redbridge in the Lambs 3rd round FA Trophy game.
With the enforced absences there were two changes to the side that beat Stevenage the previous Saturday.
The opening 45 minutes produced very little in the way of chances for either side, with both midfields battling for control and the defences clearing any danger.
The first shot at goal came on 29 minutes via a speculative effort from Glen Southam who curled his shot from 15 yards high over Mark Gayle’s crossbar.
Matty Williams glanced the ball in the net on 41, but it was ruled out for offside after Graham Ward had set him up with a floated ball into the danger area.
Dave Bampton conceded a freekick on the left just 2 minutes after the restart but Lee Goodwin headed over Gayle’s bar from close range.
Williams made a great run through the Daggers defence on 58 only to see his push past Tony Roberts flicked just out of his reach. He recovered and squared but there was no one there to fire into the net with Roberts stranded and just a defender on the line.
The influential Alan Neilson floated a teasing ball into the area from the right on 64 but Ward couldn’t connect his header and the visitors had to scramble away for a corner.
The second half was more lively that the opening 45 minutes, but opportunities in front of goal were once more at a premium.
Williams struck a hopeful effort from the edge of the area on 76 and Craig Mackail Smith let fly with a long range drive immediately after but both times the ball went wide of the mark.
Chris Moore then gave the Lambs a shock when he hit a sweet strike from the right on 82 but it clipped the top of the cross bar.
Saunders tried a shot from range shortly after but that too missed the mark, failing to trouble Gayle’s goal.
A last ditch corner forced by sub James Francis gave the Lambs a last hope of a winner, but Redmile and Michael Touhy couldn’t force the ball home.
