Gaffer steals it for victory over Villians
29 July 2015The Lambs kicked off attacking the Meadow Street end and the net rippled after just 100 seconds when Stoke U21 trialist Strong crossed from the left and Newton headed home from a few yards out giving Watkins no chance. (1-0, 2 mins)
First team Villan Grealish fired wide of the mark from the left wing on 5 and brought some friendly banter from the Shed his way as Villa boss Tim Sherwood watched on from the dug out.
Robinson fired into the arms of Belshaw on 10 and the keeper was forced to flick the ball over the bar from Sellars low drive on 14. Green hobbled off to be replaced by Davies on 18.
There was a good chance Villa’s Sellars on 24 but he dragged his shot past the far post from the right of the box.
Dyer skipped passed a challenge on the half hour and fed the ball to Newton but his shot under pressure curled harmlessly away from Watkins goal.
Sellars and Mason had half chances but failed to test Belshaw and when Grealish was tripped on 43 he dusted himself down to take the freekick but could only find the Lambs defensive wall.
The Lambs restarted proceedings but it was Villa who got the first chance from a freekick on the left of the D which Robinson lifted over the wall and it dipped just inches over the bar.
Strong jinked and turned his marker on the left wing on 49 and forced Watkins to tip it behind past the far post for a corner.
A freekick was awarded on 50 which Davies struck and it looked to have beaten Watkins but it dropped just over the bar and then from a corner Newton bundled the ball past the far post off a defender.
A ball down the left for Dyer to run on to saw the forward halted by a shoulder to shoulder challenge from Watkins, some 15 yards out of his area.
Davies freekick bounced in the area but neither Preston nor Dyer could get their head on it.
After two Lams changes, Grealish and Sellars left the field to applause on 63. On 68 Clarke span on the ball and fired a low shot into the arms of Watkins and the keper did well to push Davies chip from 20 yards around the post for a corner on 70.
Dyer took a tumble from height over a visiting defender on 75 and couldn’t continue, bringing the gaffer into the fray for the final quarter of the game.
Morrell made it 2-0 on 83 when Watkins hesitated on the ball on the edge of the area and Davies stole in to rob it off his toes allowing the gaffer to roll it home into an otherwise empty net. (2-0, 83 mins)
Villa started to exert some intense pressure after the second Lambs strike and penned the home side back but it was 3-0 on 90 when Morrell followed in his own deflected shot and headed home from a yard or two out to round off a very good display in front of a bumper crowd.
