Ebdon hat-trick sinks Gresley

FT: Tamworth 5    0 Gresley Rovers

15 January 2005

Despite a hard worked first half hour by the visitors, Mark Cooper's 33rd minute opener stopped the Moatmen in their tracks. Cooper picked up the ball after Sekani Simpson's shot had been blocked and fired home a bouncing strike that deceived Dale Belford in the Gresley goal. 1-0

The Lambs second came on 42 minutes via Marcus Ebdon. But is was Simpson again who was instrumental in the build up, taking the ball from halfway line to the opposite corner flag and knocking back for Scott Stamps to load a ball into the area. When it fell to Ebdon he curled it over the defence and into the top left hand corner. 2-0

Five minutes into the second half Lee Colkin (back from injury and on for Stamps) fired the ball low into the Gresley penalty area. Bob Taylor gave it a deft flick back to Ebdon who struck home via the inside of the post. 3-0

A long ball out of his own area by Lambs' 'keeper Chris Neal allowed Tris Whitman to run onto it and into the area. He was brought down by Gresley's Andrew Simpson and Ebdon completed his hat-trick form the penalty spot. 4-0

Colkin was provider for the final goal of the afternoon with six minutes remaining. His well placed cross from the left of the field found sub Nick Smith at the far post who did well to head home. 5-0

Marcus Ebdon recieves the match ball from Bob AndrewsCooper said after the game: "It was my first start for a while, with Mark Turner out for the forseeable future, and it was nice to get a goal. We gambled with Stamps' ongoing knee problem and Colkin's return from injury and it seemed to work. We wanted a win ahead of the Accrington game (next Saturday) and with a clean sheet as well we will look forward to the draw on Monday. I will be looking to get a couple of new faces in by the weekend, but Nick Smith has returned from his spell at Telford and it's up to him to prove he's got what it takes."
