Eagles swoops late to finish Lambs
15 November 2014
A Robert Eagle brace eventually broke Tamworth hearts after the Lambs looked to have come from 2-0 down to claim a point. Goals from Jack Ainsley and Eagle had put the Blues in charge but Tamworth stormed back to make it 2-2 thanks to goals from Brendon Daniels and Michael Townsend.
But Eagle had the final say late on when he capitalised on hesitation in the Tamworth backline to fire home from close range and gain revenge for Lowestoft’s FA Cup defeat at The Lamb earlier in the season.
Tamworth signalled their intent early on when Tom James advanced well down the left flank before seeing his shot-come-cross tipped over by Ashlee Jones. But it was the hosts that seized the initiative thereafter with Adam Smith and Curtis Haynes-Brown both coming close to breaking the deadlock.
In Daniels though the visitors always carried an attacking threat and his free-kick found Joshua Sampson completely unmarked midway through the half but the big defender headed well over the bar.
Shortly after Daniels came close to opening the scoring himself but as he bore down on goal, Jones was quickly off his line to smother the winger’s shot.
Tamworth fell behind in the 35th minute when Connor Taylor handled Adam Smith’s in-swinging free-kick, giving referee Mike George no option but to point to the spot.
Ainsley made no mistake as the former Ipswich Town man sent James Belshaw the wrong way from 12 yards.
The visitors could have been level before half-time though as Daniels’ corner was misjudged by the home keeper, who was lucky to see his miscued punch come off his own crossbar.
But it got worse for Tamworth in the 64th minute as substitute Eagle slid the ball home from a tight angle.
It looked to be game over for the Lambs but a fantastic dipping 25-yard free-kick from Daniels found the bottom corner and suddenly the momentum had completely swung.
It came as little surprise when Lowestoft failed to clear a corner and Townsend rose highest at the back post to head home.
There looked to be only one winner but somehow Tamworth managed to throw away the point they had work so hard to steal.
Eagle was the man to once again break Tamworth’s hearts as he capitalised on Townsend’s failure to clear his lines to steer the ball home from 10 yards.
Eagle was booked for his celebration and in the last minute a late challenge on Daniels saw him gain a second yellow.
It mattered not to the result as the Blues claimed three crucial points.
