Dons and Lambs share a draw
24 July 2010
Tamworth called upon ex-Hibs keeper David Grof for the visit of Mark McGhee's Aberdeen to The Lamb as Gary Mills started with a team of signed players, other than the keeper and ex-Faroe Island international Claus Jorgensen while the bench was made up with a mix of signed and trialist players.
Mark McGhee fielded a complete team of signed players other than trialist Yoann Folly although he had to give Mark Howard a game in goal following a freak injury suffered by regular Dons custodian Jamie Langfield en-route to the game. With Tamworth in blue, due to the visitors away kit not being ready in time, The Reds of Aberdeen kicked off the game towards the Neadow Street end and with 1 minute 27 on the clock Josh Magennis fired home from 6 yards out when the Lambs defence failed to clear a low ball in from Foster on the right wing. (0-1, 2 mins)
Injury to Darren Mackie on 4 saw the Dons trainer on the field for an extended period before he was able to continue and the fluorescent yellow officials, complete with wireless headphone links to each other allowed play to continue.
A freekick for Tamworth on 6 was fired into the box by Jay Smith but was deflected out for a corner with Wylde rushing in. The flag kick was flicked on but cleared by Aberdeen.
Lake-Gaskin skipped past the challenge of Considine on 8 but found his route to goal blocked as The Lambs did their best to keep possession and on 12 Lake-Gaskin spotted a gap while on the right wing and fired a shot into the near post which Howard collected.
Folly tried his luck with a low left footed angled drive from a position left of centre of the box on 15 which went well wide of the mark.
Tait curled a right wing cross from the half way line into the path of Perry shortly after but it skipped ahead of him and Howard came out to collect at height.
Magennis fed Mackie from the right on 24 but Marshall was on hand to block the shot from the latter.
Some neat passing from the visitors resulted in Magennis diverting a left wing cross from Mackie wide of the far post on 29, and the build up play of short precise passes possibly deserved better.
The Dons continued in the same vein but lacked that bit of quality in the final third allowing Tamworth to calmly but assuredly clear the danger.
Grof made his first real save of the game on 31 from Magennis's low shot following a cut back from Mackie, while at the other end Jorgensen lofted a shot at Howard.
Foster hobbled from the field a minute later to be replaced by Ryan Jack and Lake-Gaskin won a corner on 33 was headed away strongly by the Aberdeen defence.
A foul by Fyvie on Smith in the middle of the Dons half on 36 set up the Lambs captain with a right footed dead ball from 25 yards but he cleared the bar with his direct shot.
Neat passing football down the right between Tait, Lake-Gaskin and Perry allowed Tait to send a searching cross into the area which Rodman did well to control before being denied a shot on target.
The Lambs continued to show their visitors respect, but not bow to them and with Tait and Lake-Gaskin putting in good shows the home faithful were hopeful that a chance would come from the forward play and good possession football before the half time whistle blew.
Tamworth remained unchanged for the start of the second half, while Aberdeen made five changes on the field.
Lake-Gaskin found space on the right of the area to try a shot which was blocked and on 50 Jack sent a ball in fromm the left looking for Megginson but it evaded his lunge and Grof collected.
A ball to feet on the run saw a well struck low shot from Fyvie blocked by Grof on 52 and play switched to the other end as Rodman hit a low shot through a crowded box at Bain to win a corner in the next move. Perry duly headed powerfully home the equaliser at the far post from Smith's flag kick (1-1, 53 mins)
A flurry of Lambs substitutions came around the hour mark and with it a whole new feel to the Tamworth line up and formation.
Wylde looked for a run from Farrell on 66 but his pass through the Dons defence was too strong, while Collins and MacGuire linked well down the Aberdeen right, winning a corner from the former's blocked shot.
A bizarre miss-throw by Grof almost let Aberdeen in with a gift of a chance on 68 but the keeper recovered and left his area to clear the danger quickly.
Smith sent Farrell a long ball down the left on 69 which he, in turn, put back into the box for Thomas but neither he nor Smith could get a shot away.
And although Marshall gave away a freekick on the right of the box on 70, the same Lambs player was on hand to head the ball away from MacGuire's dead ball.
MacGuire made space to get an angled drive across the face of goal on 64 which was missed by both Megginson and McArdle.
Craig Reid then put Grof into danger with a weak back pass which Megginson sprinted onto but took to far wide to finish and won a corner instead. Despit a good ball in, it came to nothing but another was won on 77 which MacGuire received and shot from distance. It took a deflection and won another flag kick and when the ball came out past the far post to MacGuire again he sent a searching cross to the far post looking for the head of Collins, who met the ball strongly but could only send it over the bar from a yard out.
Fairclough replaced Craig Reid after just 19 minutes on the field and Aberdeen's Collins hit a self made volley over the bar from 18 yards following a good pass from Paton in the next move of the game.
Fairclough won a left sided flag kick as play switched to the Meadow Street end but it came to nothing.
Marshall got in the way of Collins attempted shot on 84.
Fairclough and Farrell combined to get the ball into the area from the left win on 89 but Wright was unable to keep his shot down after first taking past his marker in what proved to be the final action of the match.
