Disastrous opening half hour sinks Lambs
09 February 2008
Gary Mills’ Lambs made the long trip to Workington on the back of an excellent cup week with two great displays against Stafford Rangers and a Quarter Final FA Trophy placed booked.
There were a couple of changes to the side that played in midweek with Colin Marrison and Martin Foster returning to the side and they faced a Workington side who had not scored in three games and won just two of their last ten.
In the first minute Gareth Evans was forced to clear goalbound shot off the line from David Hewson after Alex Cisak missed his catch and Tamworth were unable to do anything about Johnny Wright’s header on 5 minutes to open the scoring for the home side. (0-1)
Three minutes later Tony Hopper blasted home a right footed drive to make it two to Workington and on 12 things went from bad to worse when Matt Berkeley finished a pin point cross back in to the box with a deft header over Alex Cisak and into the far corner after a home freekick had not been cleared.
Marrison, who had netted for Hinckley against Workington in last season’s play offs to see his former side through almost did the same again but his overhead kick was well saved by Adam Collins in the home goal.
Gareth Sheldon was replaced by Nick Wright on 23 but a minute later it was 4-0 to ‘The Reds’ of Workington when Berkeley shot and although it appeared to be going wide, J. Wright raced to stop it and cut the ball back for Hewson to find the back of the net.
Three minutes later and it was an unbelievable five when J. Wright threaded the ball to Berkeley who made no mistake to give Tamworth a mountain to climb in the second half.
With Workington having the game won all apart from the small fact of needed to play another 45 minutes of football, Tamworth found some space, and looked to capitalise but failed to created any decent chances.
Then on 61 J. Wright almost conspired to add more misery to The Lambs afternoon but was denied by Cisak and although the rebound fell kindly to Hopper his shot was ushered out of play.
Marrison fed Wright on 70 but the Lambs substitute was denied by Collin and a renewed sense of purpose from Tamworth saw fellow sub Matt Williams had a shot blocked before Michael Briscoe’s effort was deflected wide for a corner which Collin rose highest to take.
Workington were still looking for goals and Des Lyttle denied J. Wright at the far post on 75 as Tamworth ultimately fell to the heavy defeat despite a great deal of exertion in the rest of the second half which bore no fruit.
