Cunnington makes a point
17 November 2012
Marcus Law made no changes to the side that had recorded the first none defeat in six outings against Telford seven days previously. And he would be looking to his unchanged XI to try and hit the back of the net, with the goalless minute count standing at 509 as the referee blew his whistle to start the game.
Law welcomed Baldock back to the squad and the three ex-Lambs now with the United team all took a place on the opposite bench.
The Lambs kicked off away from the stand containing the seated travelling fans.
inside the second Roberts crossed form the right and Courtney slid in to put it behind for a corner. From the flag kick McAuley headed against the bar and the rebound was cleared away for another corner.
This time McAuley headed high over the woodwork from 12 yards.
Play switched to the other end quickly and Cunnington tried his luck from the left channel, but his strike went wide of the far post.
The offside flag disrupted a Lambs move on 10 and United broke down the left. Dunk was left on the floor as play went on around him and Elliot sprinted in to the box to receive the pass but tumbled and despite the crowd shouting for a penalty, the referee was not interested in the slightest.
Elliot forced Marshall to concede a corner on the right on 12 as Cambridge enjoyed more of the play and Breeden was called into action to deny Dunk, using his feet to block the low shot.
United then won another right sided corner but it came to nothing. However, the home side did go close on 22 when Wilmott spotted a gap down the right and struck low into the side netting.
Dunk hit the woodwork on 23 with a close range header from Roberts right wing cross while Wright should have done a lot better after beating the offside trap but failed to test Steer and lifted the ball high and wide of the mark from the left of the box.
The Lambs got themselves back to the other end of the field as the half hour mark came into view and Cunnington saw his shot blocked, but it fell for Tait on the right and he curled his effort into the box but the ball evaded everyone and just skipped out past the far post with Steer in full flight.
Cambridge won a flag kick on the left on 35 and caused problems in the box but failed to get a clean touch on the bouncing ball allowing Breeden to restart play with a goal kick.
Play continued with little to write home about as both sides struggled to get an purchase on the game
Two minutes added time was shown before the first half drew to a close.
United restarted proceedings and Tait brought Dunk down on the left wing allowing Jarvis to line up a dead ball on a tight angle but Dunk's header was in completely the wrong direction and Breeden sent to the ball long.
Hendrie and Barrow combined for the latter to send a low ball in from the right as the 73 Lambs fans hoped for a meaningful strike in the box. In the next move Cunnington took the ball at his feet from Hendrie as the ball went into the area and turned, before clattering into the covering defender and requiring lengthy treatment on the field for a heavy bleed from his face which required a change of shirt, changing his number to 32 in the process.
The U's won a right sided corner and Elliot glanced his header past the far post on 59 while Hendrie brought a good stop from Steer on 61 thanks to a driven low angled shot which the keeper pushed around the post for a corner on the left.
The ball fell to Barrow and his powerful shot was bravely blocked by Dunk before Courtney chipped into the box from the right and watched as it dropped just over the crossbar.
Dunk and Courtney came together in the box on 64 as the Cambridge player shaped to shoot and the Tamworth player needed treatment before play could continue.
A powerful shot from the left wing caught Marshall square on and at full pelt winning the home side a corner in the process and The Lambs worked the ball up the right wing, but United won possession back and switched to their right.
Barrow crossed for Cunnington on 69 but The Lambs striker missed his header and the covering defender diverted the ball back across the box and out for a corner from which Tait headed against the bar from a yard out.
But it was United who opened the scoring on 76 with a low angled drive from the left of the box after The Lambs defence failed to clear the danger. (0-1, 76 mins) but the party didn't last long as from the restart Cunnington fired home from 18 yards to level the tie. (1-1, 77 mins)
Taylor escaped the linesman flagging a handball in the box on 80 minutes which the referee didn't give against The Lambs defender and this spurred them to move the ball upfield and win a corner on the left which came into the box and bounced at the far post but was cleared.
Kelly shoulder barged Dunk off the ball as he ran towards the area and earned a booking for his troubles as united lined up the freekick 25 yards out with every Tamworth player behind the ball and eight of them in the wall which did it's job and cleared the danger.
Play moved upfield and Kerry lofted the ball from the right onto the head of Cunnington in the area but his effort went high and wide of the mark.
Five minutes added time was shown at the end of the game and the tempo of the game increased with both sides looking for a winner but it didn;t come and the points were shared
