County strike twice in last friendly
04 August 2007
Tamworth welcomed one of Gary Mills’ former sides (as manager) to The Lamb for the final pre-season tie for both sides ahead of the league kick off next Saturday.
Mills made just a handful of changes to the side that drew with Villa on Thursday and named nine substitutes as he looked, for the last time, at his squad. Notts County also fielded a strong team, made all most entirely of the first team squad.
County won the first corner of the game on 3 minutes and Jose Veiga collected easily. Tamworth broke but Gareth Sheldon’s right wing cross too a deflection and Tim Sandercombe gathered the loose ball.
From long Sheldon throw on 10 Sandercombe stretched but failed to catch the ball and had his defender not cleared off the line it would have given the Lambs the lead by virtue of a bizarre own goal!
A long ball towards Anthony Robinson forced county to concede a corner on 12 which Sheldon played short to Tony Thorpe, but his chip to the far post was cleared.
County opened the scoring in the 13th minutes when Neil Mackenzie received the ball on the edge of the area and half volleyed into the corner of the goal past the despairing dive of Veiga. (0-1)
An excellent move from Tamworth almost resulted in an equalizer on 19. Langdon set Thorpe free with a pinpoint ball over the top of the County defence but Thorpe’s lob over the advancing Sandercombe bounced agonizingly wide of the far post.
On 22 Sheldon crossed into the danger area from the left wing but the County keeper collected under pressure from Robinson.
Kyle Storer’s shot was deflected away from goal on 26 from Thorpe’s cross but struck Robinson en-route to goal and went out for a goal kick.
Tamworth exerted more pressure from a corner on 27 but the County defence held strong as the shots came in.
Kyle Storer forced a corner on 38 which came to nothing, and Sheldon forced a flag kick on 41 but Sandercombe caught Briscoe’s header into the area at height.
County forced two corners straight after the restart, the first was deflected behind and the second headed wide.
Just past the hour mark Carl Heggs and Sandercombe both went for a bouncing ball as it headed towards the edge of the area, Sandercombe required treatment and shortly after had to be replaced by the substitute ‘keeper.
A dangerous County corner whistled past the far post on 67 and the visitors appealed strongly for penalty when mayo appeared to go down in the area, but the offence had taken place just outside the box and Veiga easily collected Mackenzie’s freekick.
Notts made it 2-0 on 74 when Veiga and Briscoe both went for the same high ball in the area but neither connected cleanly, allowing Richard Butcher to side foot home when the chance fell invitingly for him from 12 yards.
Lambs substitute Luke Edwards tried his luck from the edge of the area on 78 but cleared the bar with his right footed shot
Butcher went close with a low drive on 85 which skimmed outside of the right hand upright and Heggs tried a looping header on 88 for The Lambs but it was off target.
