Cooper lays down the law...
19 February 2005
Lambs' manager Cooper sent out a shockwave to his players after their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Gravesend and Northfleet.
"I have told them not to bother turning up for the Leigh game if their hearts are not in it. Their performances from now on will determine their future at the club and Tuesday night is an ideal time to put the club and their reputations back on track as we absolutely have to get three points against (bottom of the league) Leigh.
"We've not scored for four games, conceeded 13 goals and the side has obviously lost some of its confidence. The new lads who have come in have done OK so far, but it's not easy for them to gel immediately.
"Gravesend reacted quicker than us today and although Ricky Millard will be blamed for the first goal - he took the high ball as a keeper should but it popped out as he landed and handed them an easy chance -but it was never a free kick against Dave Robinson that led to it anyway."
The first goal came after 43 minutes when Paul McCarthy seized on the loose ball after Millard had spilled the ball to score from a few yards out. Andy Drury had hit the crossbar with a header after seven minutes, but the first half seemed like it would end goalless.
Roy Essandoh headed the home side's second on 55 minutes after Matt Redmile failed to head clear a dangerous ball in and Matt Lovall nodded it to the far post for Essandoh to finish.
Bob Taylor had a hatful of second half chances but just couldn't put them away and Tris Whitman also created some openings, but Manny Omoyinmi almost made it three at the death but for the spectacular efforts of Millard who, at full stretch, denied a lob by the Gravesend player.
