Cooper blast secures point
08 March 2005
Lambs' boss Mark Cooper pulled one of his trademark free kicks out of the bag with just eight minutes remaining to level a tie which was a rollercoaster affair at The Lamb.
With just five minutes gone, Bob Taylor scored his 15th goal of the season, but more importantly the Lambs' first in 573 minutes to give them the lead.
And for the next 25 minutes the Lambs continued to play out of their skins against "one of the best footballing sides in the league", according to Cooper. In fact, had Cooper struck a far post shot with his right foot instead of his left it may well have extended the lead.
But on 33 minutes a Scott Stamps (later to leave the field of play with a recurrence of his knee injury) and Ryan Price mix up allowed Brian Smikle to nip in and square for Danny Williams to score easily.
Tamworth were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Adie Smith picked up a second yellow card - it is thought the Lambs may appeal the decision.
Six minutes after the break Hereford took the lead through Tamika Makandawire who prodded home the loose ball after a corner wasn't cleared, but the Lambs continued to push on and when Cooper picked his spot from 35 yards with eight minutes remaining there was nothing visiting 'keeper Craig Mawson could do about it.
"My players were fantastic," said Cooper. "We have recovered our confidence and the spirit is fantastic. I thought the first booking (of Smith) was harsh and it means we will be without another defender on Saturday. However, Aaron Brown did very well coming in after a long time out of the starting eleven.
"They were no danger until we let them score,. We were far the better side and possibly deserved to win even with the numerical disadvantage.
"Marcus (Ebdon) tried to stop me from taking the free kick, but I said a little prayer and ... whoosh!"
