Christie penalty brings a point home
01 October 2011
After a bit of coach trouble en-route to the home of the current league leaders, the scheduled pre-match stop had to be cancelled but the team arrived in good time.
Three changes to side from Tuesday with Thomas out injured Patterson, McDonald took a place on the bench while Cain Mills and Shariff came back into starting line up and there was a welcome return for Scott Barrow on the bench.
The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute surprisingly not through Jon Shaw, although he did claim the headed assist. James Curtis grabbed the goal from inside the six-yard box after a corner on the left by Josh Gillies, putting the ball to the bottom left corner of the goal. (0-1, 23 mins)
The Lambs could have been two down following a slip by Green but the Gateshead forward hit side netting as the home side continued to enjoy the upper hand until the break with Hedge punching a dangerous freekick over the bar shortly before the half time whistle blew.
St. Aimie replaced Mills at half time and although Gateshead continued to press in bursts, Francino Francis forced a save from Farman following a Cain corner on 72.
And when a 74th minute corner by Smith was adjudged to have been handled by Mulligan, who had been on the pitch just six minutes after replacing the home side's goalscorer, and a penalty was awarded to The Lambs. Christie took the penalty but the keeper moved before it had been struck and it was ordered to be retaken so Christie put it down and powered it home at the ‘second attempt' to level the tie. (1-1, 77 mins)
The game drew to a close with neither side able find a winner despite a number of half chances and the point for The Lambs was celebrated by the small band of travelling fans who had been able to make the trip.
