Chesterfield Beat Lambs
27 July 2010
Despite going down to their first pre-season defeat, Gary Mills will draw a number of positives from this good performance against a full strength Spireites.
Chesterfield arrived on the back of a 9 goal thriller against Derby County on Saturday, but they found the Lambs defence in a mean mood in the first 45 minutes.
Tamworth's first half line up almost replicated that of Saturday against Aberdeen, but Jake Sheridan made his first appearance of the pre-season slotting in for the injured Seb Lake-Gaskin. David Grof made his second Tamworth appearance in goal despite signing for Notts County yesterday. There was also a first start at left back for triallist Scott Barrow who has played for Swansea and Port Talbot. Craig McKenzie had to sit out of the game with an injury.
Neither goal keeper was troubled in the first half although Tamworth certainly had the better of the opportunities to take the lead. As early as the second minute Kyle Perry almost got a touch on the ball as it was whipped into the area. Further chances fell to Alex Rodman Richard Tait and Sheridan, Perry and Claus Jorgenson as the half progressed, but they all failed to hit the target. The best of the chances falling to Sheridan in the 28th minute after neat work from Rodman set up the Tamworth striker, but he shot over when he should have tested the keeper.
The League Two outfit found the Tamworth defence in impressive form with Tom Marshall commanding in the air and Barrow impressing in the left back position, despite taking nasty knock to the head in the 20th minute.
The second half brought about a large number of substitutions for both teams but Tamworth continued to press for the opener. Jorgenson and Rodman went close before Chesterfield grabbed the lead in fortunate circumstances in the 73rd minute. A shot from Craig Davies took a wicked deflection leaving Grof wrong footed as the ball sailed into the net.
Tamworth continued to strive forward on search of an equaliser and again Rodman was unlucky to see a volley deflected wide.
The Spireites caught Tamworth on the break in the 82nd minute when they doubled their lead. Drew Talbot broke clear on the right before crossing for Dan Whittaker to slide in and convert from close range. It could have been three two minutes later but Grof made an excellent flying save to deny Whittaker a second goal.
In the dying seconds Ben Fairclough had the ball in the net for Tamworth but the linesman signalled offside and the Lambs were left to reflect on the many positives from their first pre-season defeat.
