Brunton Park defeat for Lambs
18 September 2004
Tamworth became the first team to have scored a Conference league goal at Brunton Park against last season's relegated Division 3 side but stlil came back with no points.
There was little to write home about during the first half as Cooper’s starting eleven – boasting five changes from last Saturday – thwarted Carlisle, but also created little.
But less than one minute into the second period, the home side took the lead. The ball skipped past Aaron Brown and Magno Vieira seized on the opportunity to take the ball on, past Stamps and cross low across the face of goal. Former Walsall man Karl Hawley stuck a foot out and deflected the ball past an otherwise impressive Ryan Price.
Adie Smith shot over the bar for the Lambs almost immediately after the setback, before Carlisle started to step up a gear.
Peter Murphy fired low from the left but the ball came back off the base of the right hand upright and Blunt and Stamps cleared the ball off the Lambs goal line in separate incidents just minutes apart.
Nic Smith forced Matt Glennon in the home goal to tip over his bar with a power shot on 73, but almost immediately after, Carlisle’s Simon Grand rose high and headed the second goal from a corner.
Sub Arnison forced Price to save with his feet on 77 after good play by Murphy and Hawley tried his luck on two or three more occasions to no avail.
Tamworth got their consolation goal with virtually the last kick of the game. Bob Taylor struck the ball sweetly from 25 yards although it did get a deflection on the way through.
