Both sides get a point in poor show
05 April 2008
The Lambs made the trip to Leigh RMI’s Hilton Park ground for the last ever time (for Tamworth rather than Leigh) as the home side would be moving to a new home in the 2008/09 season and Gary Mills made just one change to the side that had defeated Burscough on Tuesday night.
Michael Briscoe was ruled out through illness, so Martin Foster came back into the side and Gareth Sheldon would no doubt be looking to add to his five goals in the past three games as Tamworth went in search of a win against the bottom of the league side.
There was little to write home about in the opening exchanges, as the crowd, populated in the majority by Lambs fans, watched from just one side of the large old ground.
That was until the 6th minute when Forster floated the ball into the path of an on rushing Nick Wright who beat the last man but cleared the bar with his shot.
Richard Chetcuti forced Dominic Langdon to head the ball behind for a corner with a cross on 13 and knocked the ball out from the first flag kick. The second corner was taken short, but the cross was woeful and hit the opposite corner for a Tamworth throw.
Then, on 15 left wing a cross from Owen Roberts was headed a few feet wide by Chetcuti from 8 yards out as Leigh looked to be playing above their league position.
A foul on Langdon caused the defender to require a replacement shirt and a time on the touchline receiving treatment and ultimately he was unable to continue which brought Graham Law into the play.
Tamworth forced a corner of their own on 20 after a good save from Tim Dittmar but the chance was cleared and Leigh were forced into a substitution of their own on 24.
Colin Marrison had a good chance a few second s later but was forced wide before he could get his shot away and a foul on the same player won a free kick on the left wing for Wright on 26 which fell to Sheldon from Dittmar’s punch but his shot was cleared.
And from it Leigh broke down the middle and were desperately lucky not to go a goal down as John Goulding finished the move with a wayward right footed shot from the edge of the area.
Leigh won another corner on the half hour mark and fired it just past the far post over the head of Chetcuti.
A slip by Des Lyttle allowed Roberts to try his luck from distance on 34 but curled his right footed effort well wide of the right hand upright while at the other end on 36 Sheldon just missed a header from Wright’s searching cross to the far post and on 39 Marrison missed the ball as Wright whipped it into the near post and it eventually went out past the far post unhindered.
The Lambs won a freekick 30 yards out on the stroke of half time which Wright hit low into the box but was eventually gathered by Dittmar. Wright made a good run into the area in added time to win a corner which was cleared and both sides ended the half with respective clean sheets
Leigh kicked off the second half, but it was Tamworth who took the game to their hosts initially.
However Leigh were giving as good as they got and kept the ball in the Tamworth half forcing a corner on 56 which Gavin Salmon headed wide of the far post.
At the other end, Nurse forced a good save from Dittmar from a tight angle and Marrison flashed a shot wide when Tamworth moved the ball back into the danger areas when the corner was only half cleared on 58.
Chetcuti missed the target by inches after a right footed volley with his back to goal on 62 and Tamworth won a corner on 67 after good work by Jake Sheridan but the flag kick came to nothing.
Mills brought Jonti Richter on for Marrison with just under 15 remaining in a bid to bring some life to the game and his cross on 77 lead to a corner which Wright struck and although Lyttle headed for Richter to square for Sheridan his shot almost cleared the vast terracing behind the goal.
Leigh’s Andy Wright tried his luck from long range on 79 but shot well wide and on 84 the home side won a corner which saw Andy Heald lifted well over the terracing.
An injurytime chance fell to Sheldon but he miss hit his shot inside the area which summed up the Lambs afternoon.
