And now for the real thing...
03 August 2013The hosts of the Northern Counties Eastern Premier Division, in their away kit of red and black, gave a very good account of themselves for the entire game and almost punished The Lambs on a couple of occasions, but also had the wood work to thank at the other end to keep the scoreline a slender one.
After an early chance for the Old Boys Eckersley flashed a header wide of the right hand post and slowly Tamworth made their presence known until the half hour mark when the first real shot, from Jones, took a deflection and whistled past the far post.
A cross from Richards whipped in an out of the box and Capaldi's corners caused problems as The Lambs won four in quick succession.
And Peniket almost added to his pre-season tally on 40 when Capaldi's cross invited a header which looped over the home keeper but was cleared off the line by a quick thinking Barton defender.
Baker then smashed a shot forcing a fine stop from the keeper and the half ended after Courtney's lifted his header from 18 yards over the target.
After the break Peniket almost found Richards with a ball from the right and a long range effort from Evans curled wide of the mark.
Jones was the player who opened the scoring and ultimately handed Belford's side another win when he skipped into the box and slotted the ball under the wrong footed the keeper.
A right footed shot from Courtney struck the right hand upright and came back out to safety in the next move, and then a penalty was awarded when Richards' goalbound header was blocked on the line although the actual reason for the decision was not completely clear.
Unfortunately for sub Harris he saw his spot kick come back off the same upright that had denied Courtney and although he finished the ball at the second attempt it didn't count as he fell foul of the ‘two touch' rule.
This seemed to spur the home side on and Barton lay siege to Cameron Belford's box for the next few minutes. A penalty shout of their own was denied and Eckersley's back pass to his keeper almost caused embarrassment when the home side nipped in but were too wide of the mark to punish The Lambs.
Woolery took advantage of a goalkeeping error at the other end but couldn't finish the chance either as The Lambs look to add one more t the tally but neither Richards or Peniket could find the target as the clock ran down on an thoroughly enjoyable afternoon by the Humber Bridge.
