All square at The Lamb
25 August 2008
Tamworth, in 6th position in the league, welcomed Redditch United to the Lamb for the bank holiday fixture and Gary Mills saw no need to make any changes to the side that defeated Stafford Rangers on Saturday.Redditch, sat in 19th place with just two points from four games, brought with them some old faces in Scott Rickards, Carl Heggs and Simon Hollis.
The Lambs kicked off toward the Meadow Streetend and won a corner on 2 which Foster took short to Wright and when the ball came out to Lyttle he tried his luck from distance but cleared the stand.
Wright hit a volley at Danny Lewis on 4 which the visiting keeper collected at his near post.
Richard Softley needed treatment for a head injury shortly after leaving Redditch a man short and Alex Johnson saw a gap for a shot on 8 only to find it wasn’t big enough and duly hit Owen Story with his drive.
Tamworth then won a second flag kick on 9 and although the ball was too long initially they worked it back into the area and McAughtrie swept the ball goalward from the right of the area only to find Lewis well placed and the keeper collected at the second attempt.
As at Stafford, Tamworth had the majority of the early play, but Puddy had to rush out to clear the ball off the toes of Story on 13.
Rodman made a good run down the left and crossed for Wright, but his header was off target and forced Redditch to concede a corner. From it, Foster set up Pritchard who side footed the ball at the goal but missed the target by a few inches.
Foster looked for Smith with a ball into the box on 18 but the Lambs midfielder was beaten to it by the visiting defence and Tamworth won another corner which Lewis collected.
Softley brought down Langdon for a freekick on the left on 19 and when the ball eventually came back for Sheldon, he struck from distance only to find, once again, Lewis in good form as the keeper tipped the ball round his post at full stretch.
Shortly after the ball came back into the box from the left and Sheldon delicately tapped home from close range beyond Lewis to open the scoring. (1-0, 20 mins)
Tamworth carried on pushing forward and won another corner shortly after which was cut out but they continued to press and won another flag kick from Rodman’s low cross which came to nothing.
Just before the hour mark, a lengthy injury requiring a stretcher, following a tackle by James Blake on Rodman brought an early substitution for Gary Whild’s side.
When the game restarted, there was no let up in pace from The Lambs and although Des Lyttle did well to prevent a scoring opportunity from Story, he conceded a freekick as the ball dropped giving Rickards a chance from the dead ball, however the former Lamb comfortably cleared the Castle End goal with his shot from 15 yards.
Puddy made a great save to deny Alex Johnson with a close range equaliser on 37 in a rare attack from Redditch which saw Story cross to the far post for Rickards before Johnson was denied.
United continued to press and won a corner on 38 which Rodman cleared and a minute or so later Tamworth were at the other end with a corner of their own when Wright forced Liam Daly to head a seemingly harmless behind.
Foster’s initial corner was knocked out for another at the far post, and the resulting flag kick blocked for another immediately after allowing Foster to fire in from the opposite side.
Wright should have made it 2 with close range a header from a cross but didn’t get enough purchase to Pritchard’s centre and the first booking came a minute later on 42 when Lee Downes felled Pritchard with a crunching tackle and the half drew to a close with little more to report.
United kicked off the second period and made their second sub of the game prior to the restart.
McAughtrie conceded a corner on 48 which was over hit by the visitors and allowed Tamworth the chance to build from the back from the resultant throw.
But it was Redditch who seemed to have more of the play with Story and Downes linking well but producing little.
A debated freekick was awarded against Smith on 51 on the left of the area which Danny Edwards floated into the danger area and McAughtrie headed behind under pressure for a corner from which Tamworth broke well through Wright but play was halted when he fouled by the touch line.
Play switched almost immediately to the other end and ended with a powerful drive from Howard Forinton straight at Puddy who caught at chest height on 54.
Redditch were indeed enjoying a larger share of the play keeping The Lambs at bay but Pritchard did manage a right footed shot which went over the bar on the hour mark following good play from Wright and Sheldon.
Daly got a good touch on 62 but put his shot well side from a United corner while a very late flag denied Sheldon running clean through against Lewis on 64.
Rodman tried a low shot at Lewis on 65 which failed to trouble the keeper and McAughytrie then fouled Arma Verma at the other end to set up a dead ball chance on the edge of the D which Hollis struck straight into the wall before being cleared.
A superb run by Wright on 68 was only let down by his cross which Lewis collected as Sheldon and Rodman powered into the box and the latter surged forward over the half way line on 69 before being brought down.
The Lambs continued to find Redditch playing with a more positive attitude than in the first half and they won two corners on 63 but neither troubled Puddy.
From the second Puddy released Rodman and he got himself into the opposition box but ran out of space. He was replaced shortly after by Sheridan.
Redditch then equalised through Story who latched onto a long ball which evaded the Lambs defence before shooting low past Puddy from the right of the area into the far corner. (1-1, 78 mins)
The visitors kept up the pressure and Hollis fired a left sided, right footed freekick onto the head of Daly on 73 which whistled past the far upright then, from a similar position at the other end Foster saw his freekick put behind for a corner.
The build up play took a while to yield a chance, but eventually Sheridan hit a left footed shot from Smith’s chip over the defence just wide of the left hand upright on 86.
From a Chris Smith corner on 87 Sheldon hit Lyttle with his volley and Tamworth won a freekick which earned a booking for Daly on 87 as the ball left the area on the right giving Smith another chance to exert some pressure but nothing was forthcoming.
With the minutes ticking down both sides needed something special to guarantee three points rather than one a piece and it almost came from Verma who turned on the edge of the area and shot straight at Puddy on 90 and at the other end Sheldon was adjudged just offside as he tried to get onto a good through ball but time ran out for both sides and honours were shared.
