Lambs fall to Quakers

FT: Darlington 1883 3    2 Tamworth

08 April 2017

After the victory over Harrogate gave the Lambs slim hope of a play off place and Andy Morrell took his side to Blackwell Meadows, the new home of Darlington, on a ground that had seen less than a dozen National League games played on it since the Quakers moved to their new home at the end of 2016.

Morrell stuck with keeper Dan Jezeph ahead of James Belshaw but made two changes out field with Connor Taylor and Ross Dyer coming into the starting eleven.

Darlington got the game underway and on a hard bouncy pitch that was previously more used to a rugby match the ball bobbled around a bit in the early exchanges.
Darlington forced a corner on the left on 4 which was forced out for a throw on the left and from it the home side opened the scoring. The long throw flew into the area and Galbraith rose highest and flickec it back over Jezeph into the far corner (0-1, 5 mins)
Styche mis hit a dropping ball on 8 and Barlett collected it easily and then the home side broke but with three players to chose from the final ball in did not beat the offside trap but still drew a round of applause from the partisan home crowd.
Thompson’s cross deflected off Morley for a right sided flag kick on 12 and Jezeph clawed it away before Deeney cleared the Lambs lines.
But the Lambs were level soon after when Newton fired home from the left of the area. He took the ball down 25 yards out, beat his man and fired diagonally inside the far post with Bartlett in mid air and at full stretch. (1-1, 15)
Jezeph prevented Cartman from rifling the ball home from 6 yards out on 17 with a brave save under pressure when the ball came in from a free kick and Thompson missed the target under pressure in the box a minute later.
The Lambs keeper made another good catch at height from a left sided cross on 22 and on 26 Thompson’s cross was volleyed by Gillies but failed to trouble the keeper too much.
A teasing corner from the right on 31 dropped over Jaezeph and Brown struck it back towards the target but only found the side netting to the relief of the travelling Lambs.
As the ball came forward over the half way line Styche escaped what the home fans and bench and players thought should have been a booking for what everyone claimed was an elbow but he didn’t show a card.
Syers struck first time from a pull back into the box from Thompson on 37 and jezeph pulled a great save out of the bag low to his right to deny him.
But there was not much he could do on 41 when the ball fell to Thompson on the right of the 6 yard box and he lifted it over the keeper and under the bar into the net at the far post to take the lead into the home dressing room at the break (1-2, 41 mins)

HT: Darlington 1883 2    1 Tamworth

Morrell made a double change at the break and Tamworth got the game back underway.
Beck was set up by Cartman on 48 but Jezeph made light work of tipping it around the post with a fingertip save to his left and the corner threatened but came to nothing.
Deeney was awarded a freekick on 52 but his chat with the referee earned him a booking. And in the next move Darlington made mincement of the Tamworth back line with a five pass move into the six yard box that was finished easily by Cartman (1-3, 53 mins)
Darlo kept the pressure on and Tamworth looked rattled as the hour passed and Thompson’s shot deflected out for a flag kick on the right which Jezeph was equal to at his near post.
A couple of Lambs corners soon after saw some action in Bartlett’s box, but he was not troubled by Jones’s far post header.
Dyer flicked the ball home at the near post on 66 with a cheekily attempted finish that squeezed into the net to give Tamworth belief and hope.
Newton then shot for goal from the left but struck the rear stantion holding the net up and Brandon Fox forcd Bartlett to tip the bal over his bar for a corner with a dipping shot from the left on 67 as The Lambs grew in confidence.
But there was always danger and Thompson made headway from inside his own half on 73 before striking the bar with a delicate lob from 18 yards.
Syers found himself on the edge of the box with a sight on goal on 80 but struck it straight at Jezeph who collected at head height and Lane forced Bartlett to smother a looping volley on 82.
Dyer made a nuisance of himself on the left of the box and forced a corner on 88 which whipped into the box and out past the far post as Darlo tried to run the clock down.
Thompson and Cartman played a neat one-two into the box on 89 but the shot from the former was blocked and four minutes added time was shown.
Newton truck a half volley from Jezeph’s long goal kick over the bar by only a short distance on 93 but time ran out on a late Lambs comeback and ultimately any remaining play-off aspirations.
