Lambs see red and Boro do the festive double
01 January 2017
After the 2-1 reversal at The Lamb on Boxing Day, Andy Morrell made three changes to the starting eleven bringing Morley, Newton and Deeney in for Lane, Davies and Briscoe at a rain soaked Liberty Way ahead of kick off of the 101st meeting between the two sides.
The Lambs kicked off towards the home stand and the first shot of the game whistled wide from Newton.
Newton received the ball from Dyer in the third minute and the striker flicked it over his marker in the box but keeper Dibble smothered the loose ball.
A foul by Jones on Clifton on the right wing on 5 set up Tempest with a left footed freekick and it flew out past the last man, Styche, for a goalkick, Belshaw’s first touch of the ball.
Newton put pressure on Dibble and forced a corner on 6 but the keeper was able to prevent Newton’s half hit shot under pressure from troubling him.
Belshaw did well to push a shot from Styche over the bar after the deflection off Morley sent it goalward on 8.
On 10 Morley send a long ball cross field to the right of the box and Dyer struck it well but Dibble pushed it onto the cross bar and it was cleared.
Nuneaton broke forward and Ironside got a good header away but Belshaw was happy to let it go out past his far post.
A trip on Mills on the left wing set up the same player with a deadball on 17 but it was struck too high and too long and the home fans enjoyed applauding his effort.
Similar admiration was shown for a strike by the home side shortly after, and then Styche blocked a Belshaw clearance which rebounded towards goal but thankfully went well wide of the mark.
Dyer slipped the ball through to Fox on 22 but his shot went high and wide of the right hand post.
Newton was booked on 32 for a challenge on Langmead.
Mills was then booked on 38 for a challenge on Styche on the half way line when the home side had broken from a corner and they took the lead when Nicholson tried his luck from distance with a low shot that took everyone by surprise and skipped past Belshaw’s dive and into the back of the net (0-1, 39 mins)
One minute added time was shown at the end of the first half.
Nuneaton restarted proceedings and Sytche was booked on 47 for bringing Burns down midway into the home half, but Deeney’s freekick was headed away by Geoghaghon.
A Boro corner came to nothing and allowed The Lambs to break up field, but play was halted when Fox was adjudged to have taken Clifton out with a close range tackle where he seemed to win the ball.
A cross from the left was flicked on by Newton on 55 and Fox knocked it out against Geohaghan for a corner on the right but handball in the box stopped any hopes of an euqaliser.
Morgan was booked on 62 for booting the ball at Mills after the whistle had blown and Mills placed the freekick into the danger area but Dibble punched it clear.
Mills was knocked to the floor by Styche on the opposite side of the field 90 seconds later and Deeney struck a low dead ball into the box but it was cleared and the offside flag stopped play when it came back in.
Burns prevented Styche a shooting chance on 66 with a well timed boot and from the corner Jones was forced to head behind for another on the other side.
From the corner Tomassen headed Styche’s goal bound effort off the line for another flag kick but Tamworth dealt with it and managed a foray up the field.
Geohaghan picked up a booking for bringing Jones down on 70 after Newton had struck wide of the mark from 20 yards and Briscoe got ready to be the first sub of the game on 75.
Briscoe struck from the right of the box but sent the ball past the left hand upright with Dibble at full stretch on 76.
A strong run from Briscoe into the box on 82 earned a corner when Newton struck the loose ball over with the aid of a deflection and from the corner Jones headed it into the box for Clarke but he headed it over from 6 yards out. Morley tried a cheeky cross from the left on 84 but it too was deflected away for a corner which came to nothing.
Langmead was booked on 88 for tripping Newton and it set up Deeney with a freekick 25 yards from goal which struck the wall. Three minutes added time were shown at the end of the game and Burns was booked for a challenge by the left hand corner flag.
Jones was sent off for an incident in the middle of the park and Clifton had to be helped from the field in an unrelated incident causing a substitution in the 97th minute and the final whistle blew shortly after.
