Another five star performance at Tameside

FT: Curzon Ashton 1    5 Tamworth

10 September 2016

For the trip to the Tameside Stadium, Andy Morrell made one change to the starting eleven that defeated Gloucester in midweek, with Louis Ezewele out, Anthony Breslin came back into the line up. Stephen Tomassen, who had been sent off on Tuesday night made his 50th appearance before suspension kicked in.

Tamworth got the game underway and Newton nearly got the Lambs on the scoresheet in less than a minute but his shot went out past the far post.
A freekick on the left wing on 4 by Mills caused some problems, and a challenge on Breslin in a similar position on 9 set up Mills with another deadball to strike.
It forced a corner from the Curzon defence and the corner fell onto Tomassen’s head but he couldn’t keep it down.
Another flag kick came on 12 and this time it worked exactly as planned with Tomassen heading home at the near pot past Burton. (1-0, 12 mins)
A foul on the Curzon right wing gave the home side the chance to get the ball in the box and force a corner, but Belshaw was happy to catch at height.
Davies sent a couple of quality balls into the box around the 20 minute mark, but they just failed to beat the defender and find Newton.
Mills made it 2-0 on 29 when the initial shot from Newton was not cleared effectively and it cannoned out to Mills, 25 yards from goal who slotted his first goal of the season home inside the left hand upright with Burton beaten. (2-0, 29 mins)
A smart turn of his marker on 34 saw Mills beat his man and send a teasing cross into the hand of Burton with Newton bearing down on him as Curzon continued to offer any real resistance.
A defence splitting pass from Davies found Mills on 37 and he knocked it back for Breslin but he struck first time rather than taking a touch and was off target with his effort from the edge of the box.
Curzon had a half chance on 37 too when Cummins connected with a far post cross but put the ball into the side netting. Bailie sent Mills tumbling on 43 and the ball was cleared but Tamworth kept possession and continued to push forwards.
A brief push up field by the home side came to nothing other than a half hearted call for handball against the Lambs defence and the half time whistle blew.

HT: Curzon Ashton 0    2 Tamworth

The home side restarted proceedings but did little to impress and Newton struck for goal on 48, forcing a fingertip save from Burton to tip it around the post for a corner on the right.
Davies sent it long and onto the head of Newton but Burton as well positioned to take it at his far post. Green’s ball through to Newton forced a corner on the left on 50 and Newton rose unmarked at the back of the area to head home into an unguarded net. (3-0, 51 mins)
The Lambs exerted some more pressure as the hour mark approached but there was still time for Gorman to strike a tame shot at Belshaw to keep the keeper on his toes.
Another Lambs corner on 59 was taken short and punched away by Burton.
Curzon’s Ennis was brought down by Burns in the left channel on the hour and it earned him a yellow card, the freekick was sent into the box by Ennis and Hunt bundled it home to reduce the deficit (3-1, 60 mins)
The Curz now had the bit between their teeth and started to play more attacking football for the first time in the game, but it was short lived and a trip on Newton on the left wing saw Mills send the ball into the box.
It fell to both Newton and Dyer but neither could force the ball home, so when it dropped invitingly for Tomassen he smashed it home from 8 yards out (4-1, 67 mins)
Deeney replaced Davies shortly after and he provided Newton with an inch perfect cross to head home on 77 after fine work from midfield by Green and Brsicoe’s ball out of the midfield (5-1, 77 mins)
Taylor replaced the hardworking Green on 81 and The Lambs forced a couple more corners as the time ticked down. Curzon found their second wind and exerted some rare pressure in the final third, including an even rarer corner on 89 which fell to Wright who forced Belshaw to push a drive over his bar.
A powerful drive from Newton was parried by Burton in added time and the final whistle blew on another 5 goal haul.
