Chorley frustrate Lambs plans
03 September 2016
For the visit of 6th placed Chorley, Lambs box Andy Morrell made one change his 8th placed side that defeated Alfreton on Bank Holiday Monday. With Ellis Deeney suffering with illness Lee Smith came into the starting eleven for his first start of the campaign, while James Belshaw put the goalkeeper shirt on for the 100th time after since joining the club in 2014-15.
Chorley got the game underway attacking the Castle End in the first half.
Inside the first 6 minutes Tamworth had the ball in the net twice but the referee decided that both Newton and Taylor had been too aggressive in their attitude to rob the visiting defence and finish past Ashton.
A deflected shot from O’Keefe almost forced Belshaw to protect his net but he watched it drop over the target on 11.
On 19 Tomassen took one for the team as Walker fell under his challenge en route to the box and although the freekick was blocked, the ball rebounded back to Walker and he unleashed a powerful drive over the crowded box and into the top right corner, 0-1, 20 mins.
Newton was booked for intent rather than the actual challenge, which didn’t connect on 32 and the home fans definitely didn’t agree with the man in the middle’s decision(s).
A foul on Davies by O’Keefe saw the Chorley player go into the book and Clarke set up the freekick into the box but it was too long and went out for a goalkick.
Three minutes added time were shown at the end of the first half and Walker was booked for shirt pulling before the half time whistle blew.
Morrell made two changes at the break and a deep freekick from Mills almost found Dyer and Newton kin the six yard box but it skipped off the surface and went out past the far post on 50.
Another freekick, for a foul on Mills on the edge of the area on 52, set up the same player and his dead ball deflected over the wall for a corner on the left.
Newton almost connected with a Davies ball from the left on 66 and when Briscoe put the ball back in Dyer had two attempts to finish past Ashton but both times the keeper held strong.
Davies direct shot from the left took a massive deflection for what everyone thought was a corner, but none was given.
Davies hit a rare Lambs shot from the left channel into the arms of Ashton and Newton flashed a shot from distance that would have left the keeper stranded but was too wide of the far post to trouble him.
A move down the left and Mills ball into the box forced a corner on 87 but it went out past the far post and came to nothing.
The game went into added time with nothing indicated from the far side as to how long though and Briscoe managed to roll a shot at the near post into the arms of the keeper.
Chorley forced a corner at the end and The Lambs went in search of a late equaliser but nothing came before the final whistle blew.
