Pilgrims make progress at Lambs expense

FT: Boston United 3    0 Tamworth

16 August 2016

On the back of the seven points from the opening three games Tamworth made the long midweek journey to York Street to face an already struggling Pilgrims side although The Lambs fact-file showed that no Tamworth side had ever tasted victory in Lincolnshire in all eight previous encounters stretching back to 1966 (and so it was to be again!)

Tamworth boss Andy Morrell made one change to the starting eleven from Saturday’s last minute win over Telford with Jed Davies coming in for Greg Mills while Boston were unable to field former Lamb Shane Clarke who was making the long recovery from injury.

Boston got the game underway but The Lambs went on the offensive and forced a corner on 3 which caused some problems before the home side cleared and made headway down the left via St.Juste and Hiliard but the latter’s shot was off target by some distance.
The home side took the lead on 5 though when Lane lost possession in the midfield and Fairhurst capitalised, making a run into the right of the box before firing home past Belshaw into the bottom left corner but he had to be substituted before the play restarted. (0-1)
Newton skipped through to the edge of the six yard box and forced Dibble to save with his feet for a Lambs corner which came to nothing on 9.
There was a stoppage in play around 14 when Lane had to be treated for a head injury which saw his draw blood and he was unable to continue bringing Ezewele on for the remainder.
Taylor struck the bar with a right footed curler from the edge of the area on 16 and play switched to the opposite end where United forced a corner on the left on 18.
A high boot by Marshall on Burns on 20 set up Davies with a right sided freekick and Ross flicked his header onto the bar with Dibble beaten.
On 23 Tomassen denied Colley’s run into the box with a good challenge and a threaded pass at the other end almost found Dyer but the offside flag halted his run through the back four. Newton forced a corner with a strong run at the home defence on 27 and he got his head to the ball at the far post but was denied by Dibble’s save.
Newton received the ball back 15 yards out and drilled a shot wide of the left hand upright.
Tomassen saw red on 35 when he and Colley came together in the area and left The Lambs a man short for the remaining 55.
Roberts stepped up for the penalty for Boston United and Belshaw guessed correctly to push it over the bar to keep it at 0-1.
Two minutes added time was shown at the end of the first half and a Davies freekick into the box was taken easily by Dibble.

HT: Boston United 1    0 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted the game but the first chance fell to St Juste who puts the ball just wide of Belshaw's left hand upright on 47 with a low shot from 18 yards and at the other end a similar shot from Davies goes inches wide of the left hand post too.
On 51 a great header back from Dyer to Newton who hit it first time on the volley saw the shot go over the bar by a few feet with Dibble probably beaten.
A superb save by Belshaw then denied St Juste at the far post after a downward header from Smith and from the corner Colley volleyed a side footer over the bar.
A strong run from Newton out of midfield into the left of the area forced a corner on 58 but it was cleared by the home defence and another flag kick came on the hour.
A freekick was awarded to Tamworth on the edge of the area on 76 following handball against the Boston defence after good work from Davies and Deeney struck it twice – first into the wall then through into the arms of a grateful Dibble.
On 68 Boston extended their lead when a long throw from the Lambs left saw the ball bounce into the box and not get dealt with allowing Colley to half volley home past Belshaw from 8 yards out. (0-2)
Morrell made a double change at this point, bringing himself and Mills into the action.
But Boston hit their third of the evening on 72 when Hillard received the ball in the left of Belshaw’s box and turned his marker before firing in off the far post (0-3)
Maguire was booked on 75 and Deeney took the freekick but it was quickly dealt with. After some flowing passes around the midfield, Davies spotted an opening and struck for goal from distance but didn’t manage to test Dibbble.
Mills struck a dipping shot that was tipped over by Dibble on 80 and from the corner Morrell forced another good save from the keeper with a goal bound header.
On 86 Mills found space to get into the Pilgrims box but shot from the right of the area past the far post and out and from a quick freekick downfield on 88 he forced the keeper into another stop with a low shot from the edge of the area.
Three minutes added time was shown at the end of the second half and Boston sub Johnson curled a shot at Belshaw that he was happy to take with relative ease while Roberts flashed a shot well wide of the mark before the final whistle blew on the Lambs largest margin of defeat at York Street, witnessed by 33 travelling fans
